Editor's Note: The following letter is from Nicki Aaker, Director of Carson City Health and Human Services, addressing concerns about local testing and numbers of COVID-19 cases that was addressed by Carson Now reader, Abby, who explained her own and her husband's situation. Thank you, Abby, for bringing your story to the forefront. Abby’s story was published on CarsonNow Saturday at 9:28 am. As the Director of Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS), I would like to address some of the issues that Abby has brought up.

On Saturday, March 27, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation added system and staffing support to accommodate those who need login or PIN assistance, as individuals needing assistance to reset their UI login information or PIN has been the main issue individuals have been encountering when filing online at UI.nv.gov.

Yesterday Central Lyon County Fire Department responded to the Sutro Tunnel area for reports of an ATV accident. Crews were able to get all four occupants out to safety where they all received medical care.

Central Lyon would like to thank Storey County Fire, Careflight, Lyon County SO and Washoe County RAVEN.

A 76-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for felony violation of a stalking order Thursday afternoon.

According to the report, Helen Donner Kelly was arrested after a call came in from the protected party stating that Kelly was parked out front of the party’s house. It was then reported that Kelly was standing in the driveway.

A year ago today, firefighters were called to the historic Adele's restaurant at 5:19 a.m., during a freezing morning before the sun had even crested the hills. It wasn't a large blaze, most of it had actually been confined to the laundry room in the back of the building. But over the next several months while the popular cafe stood empty, it's doors and windows boarded shut, it was determined that the smoke damage to the building was too great to save.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) is experiencing an unprecedented number of unemployment insurance (UI) claims as businesses and employees across the state are impacted by efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19.

On March 27, 2020, at approximately 5:54 AM, a Nevada Highway Patrol Sergeant had stopped to assist a motorist on US-93 and White Pine county mile marker 106, north of Ely, NV. During this contact, the motorist open fired on Sgt. Ben Jenkins, who was struck and killed.

UPDATE 12:30 p.m.:

On March 27, 2020, at approximately 5:54 AM, a Nevada Highway Patrol Sergeant had stopped to assist a motorist on US-93 and White Pine county mile marker 106, north of Ely, NV. During this contact, the motorist open fired on Sgt. Ben Jenkins, who was struck and killed. The motorist stole the Sergeant’s uniform and fled the scene in Sgt. Jenkins’ patrol vehicle. Following a search that lasted several hours, the suspect, John Dabritz, a 65-year-old White Pine resident, was located and taken into custody with the assistance of multiple agencies.

While many of Carson City’s local businesses were mandated to shut down to help the rapid spread of COVID-19, some businesses were deemed to be essential under Governor Sisolak’s order; however, even those essential businesses have changed the way they do business to try and alleviate stresses on the health care system.

Software engineer Derek Morgan, Democratic primary candidate for Assembly District 40, will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon, being held online only for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office is pleased to welcome Remus to the K-9 Unit. Remus is an 18-month-old Shepherd Malinois mix, from Poland, and is a total rookie. Remus will undergo intense training over the next 5 weeks alongside handler Josh Chaney, Carson City Sheriff’s Patrol Deputy.

Michael Moriarty took low gross honors with a 74 as the Sunday Men’s Club kicked off its season March 22 at Silver Oak Golf Course. The season was delayed because of bad weather the week prior, and play was in accordance with mandated health precautions.

Ondra L. Berry, the Adjutant General of the Nevada National Guard who oversees the Nevada Air and Army Guard, has been promoted by the Department of the Air Force to the rank of major general. He will add a second star to his uniform once Gov. Steve Sisolak promotes Berry in a pending promotion ceremony.
