Spring Fever Revival warms up 2021 return of Hot August Nights to Reno-Sparks, Virginia City

RENO — As events begin to fill the 2021 calendar following a year of postponements and cancelations, count on Hot August Nights to get everyone ready for summer lovin’ starting with the annual Spring Fever Revival Poker Run Saturday, May 22, and then later this summer, Hot August Nights starting July 30 to Aug. 8.

To adhere to current guidelines, the Spring Fever Revival event has transformed to a classic car poker run from its traditional Show-n-Shine.

“Our Spring Revival Poker Run is just that, a revival of getting back to classic cars, classic music and having a great time,” said Alan Tom, executive director, Hot August Nights. “We hope that this start to the Reno events calendar continues to bring renewed optimism and support to the many businesses that had a challenging year. As one of the region’s premier events, we’re ready to be back.”

The poker run starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. at Summit Racing Equipment, located at 960 E Glendale Ave., in Sparks, Nevada. All hands must be turned in by 5 p.m. and winners are announced starting at 6 p.m.; need not be present to win. All participants that complete their Poker Run hand(s) will be entered into a prize drawing for a Hot August Nights basket.

Participation in the Spring Revival Poker Run:
— Open to all 1979 and older cars, pickup size trucks and emergency vehicles; $20 registration fee;

— Registration runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Summit Racing Equipment;

— First 500 participants receive one (1) hand, a commemorative dash plaque, a Port of Subs tote bag, pen and other sponsor coupons/gifts;

— 2021 Hot August Nights registered participants will receive one (1) additional free hand with Spring Revival registration;

— Complete the eight stops on the Poker Run and turn in the completed hand by 5 p.m. at Summit Racing Equipment;

— Additional hands and bonus cards are available for purchase at check in for $5 per extra hand or a $1 for bonus cards;

— Cash prizes include First place $1,000, Second place $500; and Third place $250.

— Play the Road Rally game by watching for certain signs and items along the way; fill out the Road Rally form and be entered to win a Hot August Nights basket.

Applications now available online until May 14. Onsite registration available at Summit Racing.

Then, get ready for Hot August Nights, the largest classic car and nostalgic festival in the county. The 10-day celebration starts in the historic mining town of Virginia City, Nevada, Friday, July 30, and concludes with a grand finale parade in Reno, Nevada, Sunday, Aug. 8.

Carson City Empty Bowls Planning committee wants to express their gratitude to the community for coming out to the 9th Annual Empty Bowls event held this past Friday, December 1st, at the Carson Mall.

Throughout the year, the committee invites the community to join them at Ogres-Holm Pottery to learn how to create, glaze, and design ceramic bowls for the event.

The much-anticipated name for the new ECHL hockey team making its home at the Tahoe Blue Event Center was announced Thursday night in front of over 1,000 enthusiastic local fans. The Tahoe Knight Monsters will start playing at the new center in October 2024.

PBS Reno President and CEO Kurt Mische will be the guest speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The public is invited to attend the event which takes place on Tuesday, December 5, at noon in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom.

On November 16th, Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 held a dinner for fellow Elks, and dignitaries, who came to Carson City for their mid-term convention.

He’s a nine-month-old large lad who has been with us since the beginning of October. He’s a good boy who’s a bit shy; however, he becomes very social once he spends a few minutes with someone and gets to know them a bit.

This Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, award winning country artist Lacy J. Dalton will be joining local songwriter, musician Canyon White for the Canyon Club radio show from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at A to Zen in Carson City.

On Monday, December 4, 2023, a heavy concrete pouring project is planned between 5:00 AM and 2:00 PM as part of the Rolling A Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase Four Expansion project in Dayton, Nevada.

During this period, heavy concrete truck traffic (up to 10 trucks every hour) is expected in the Riverview neighborhood area.

In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this past October, Carson High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets sold pink aiguillettes to wear on their uniforms with all proceeds donated to the Carson Tahoe Health Cancer Resource Center.

UPDATE: The Carson City Fire Department reported the following:

Just after 11am your Carson City Fire Department responded to a house on fire in West Carson City. Firefighters were confronted with a heavily involved garage fire. Firefighters quick actions prevented the fire from spreading into the main house. A total of 23 Firefighters responded to the blaze. One firefighter suffered a minor injury. The cause of the fire is under investigation. East Fork Fire assisted in extinguishing the fire.

It’s that time of year again to arrange a visit by Santa on Christmas Eve. Good cheer and the handing out of presents will be the order of this special evening, thanks to the Carson City Sheriff's Office Uniform Reserve Unit, Search & Rescue, and Mounted Unit Volunteers. This special visit has been a Carson City tradition for 30 years now.

The Carson City Community Emergency Response Team will be offering a free Basic Training Academy in mid-January 2024, and is accepting applications from persons interested in volunteering.

For many years, local children and teens in need have been able to receive Christmas gifts through a shopping experience. However, this year, due to the number of qualifying children, teenagers in transition will not be able to participate. 

On learning this, one local business decided to step in to fill the gap. 

The Nevada State Police Highway Patrol identified two State Troopers who died in the line of duty Thursday, Nov. 30 after being struck by a vehicle on I-15 in Las Vegas.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office announced Thursday it has arrested a 36-year-old man for suspected sexual assault of a minor under 14.

Beginning Saturday, Santa will make appearances over the next three weekends at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, which is hosting holiday train rides for families featuring the big man with the long beard, happily decked out in red.

On Thursday, Nov. 30, at approximately 3:23 a.m., two Nevada State Police Troopers were making contact with a motorist who appeared to be sleeping behind the wheel and was pulled over to the side of the road in the area of Interstate-15 and D Street.

Clear Creek Bowmen Holiday with A Hero Shoot is this Sunday, Dec. 3 at the Carson City Archery Range, just East of Eagle Valley Golf Course. The event is open to the public.

October gambling revenue from casinos in Carson City and Carson Valley fell 5.45 percent over October 2022 figures, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board in a report released Thursday.
Historical Society presents "A Sugar Plum Victorian Christmas Tour"

The Carson City Historical Society presents, "A Sugar Plum Victorian Christmas Tour" on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, with seven locations open for tours. Tours start at 12:30 p.m., 1:00 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. at the Carriage House, behind the Foreman Roberts House at 1207 North Carson St., Carson City.

The Silver City Preservation Society welcomes everyone for a day of holiday revelry and shopping on the Comstock! On Saturday, Dec. 2, 12 local and regional fine artists and artisans will show and sell their handmade wares in the beautiful, festively decorated historic Silver City Schoolhouse in Silver City, the heart of the Comstock. Admission is free.
