Peace officers gather for non-public 2021 Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony
Nevada Gov. Sisolak ordered Wednesday flags to half-staff in honor of the 2021 Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony. Among those honored was Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Benjamin Jenkins, an Elko native, was shot and killed in the line of duty on March 27, 2020 when he stopped to assist a disabled motorist on US-93 n White Pine County.
Also honored were Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Erik Lloyd, and Nye County Sheriff Office Bailiff Gerald Smith. Both died of COVID related complications.
By executive order, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Nevada to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and State public buildings and grounds Thursday morning through sunset Thursday in honor of the 2021 Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony.
“The State of Nevada owes a debt of gratitude to the men and women who serve as law enforcement officers in our State and throughout the nation, who risk their lives for the continued peace, safety, and security of our society,” said Gov. Sisolak.
“This year, we reflect on the lives and legacies of the Nevada Department of Public Safety — Highway Patrol Sgt. Ben Jenkins, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Erik Lloyd, and Nye County Sheriff Office Bailiff Gerald Smith, who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the residents of our great State.”
