Pioneer High School Senior Spotlight: Sydney Miller
Pioneer High School’s Sydney Miller is an example of a student who has added ambition with opportunity to create her success.
Sydney’s journey has not been easy or without hurdles to overcome, however her attitude to be her best and a tenacity to succeed has helped her accelerate her education to where in just a couple of months she will earn her high school diploma and an associates of art degree from Western Nevada College in only three years. Sydney’s goal is to become a social worker and help people work through difficult issues. Her personal experience of loss of a loved one has taught her that everyone needs a person in their life to help them navigate difficult times and through this belief she has dedicated herself towards the pursuit of helping others.
Attending Pioneer High School has given Sydney the opportunity to participate in the Jump Start program. Jump Start is a program partnership with Western Nevada College that allows high school students to take college courses while satisfying their high school requirements.
Sydney began taking WNC courses as a tenth grader and with the continual support of her family and close friends she has been able to maintain a balance of academics and life. Sydney loves to go off-roading and discover those hidden roads and treasures that are abundant in northern Nevada. Spending time out in nature and enjoying the beauty around her has helped her keep perspective of what is important to her.
When asked what advice she would have for other students who may be struggling to find their purpose or motivation Sydney said “There is something out there for you, there is a career there for you. Take some classes to help find what you are interested in and what motivates you. Take a chance on yourself.” Sydney’s mom, two sisters and her best friend Mary have encouraged her to take a chance on herself and in a few short months the rewards of her hard work will take her another step closer to achieving her goals.
