'Adopt a Senior' social media group endeavors to celebrate seniors in Carson City and beyond
In only a few short days, the Adopt a Senior community program has grown to nearly 4,000 members and shows no sign of slowing down.
The Adopt a Senior group was created on April 22 with the intention that a community member, family member or friend would “adopt” a local high school senior in order to make their senior year feel special since the closure of schools due to COVID-19 has left many seniors isolated from their peers and their school’s community.
“The amount of support, love and participation is really overwhelming,” said one of the Adopt a Senior founders, Paige Young. “We started this site with the hopes of putting a few smiles on seniors’ and parents’ faces. What it has become is a whirlwind of awesomeness and the reality that even in bad times and hard times we can still all come together as a community and find the positive within the negative.”
Parents or guardians of a high school senior make a post about their child within the group, which includes their name, a bit of information about the student and some pictures.
Then, community members from the group will “adopt” the student and will come up with gift ideas to make the student feel special during their senior year.
According to Young, as of today over 460 local seniors have been adopted by community members.
“These kids really worked hard to achieve their goals, be it college, trade school, traveling the world or just graduating, which is a accomplishment in itself,” said Young. “Losing the ability to celebrate is devastating to these kids and parents. Missing out on ceremonies, prom and grad night. This is why we did this. To celebrate them and their hard work.”
While it can’t make up for the loss of prom or senior sunset or any of the other quintessential senior year activities, it is at least a way to let our seniors know they haven’t been forgotten.
You can find the local Adopt a Senior group on Facebook here.
“We are ready and willing to take on as many as possible, even if that means 10,000 members and however many adoptees,” said Young. “The more the merrier.”
