Carson City's Smith's reopens following Health Department closure, store has yet to respond to contamination questions
Carson City's Smith's, located at 599 E. William Street, has reopened following its closure by the health department.
According to the department, a complaint was received by a customer stating they had witnessed multiple mice within the store. An Environmental Health Inspector was dispatched to the store and observed rodent droppings in areas of the store where pre-packaged foods are located. During that inspection, no mice were seen.
However, the store was closed to provide corrective actions. According to Carson Now readers who were shopping at the time, customers were not told why the store was closing but were asked to head to the cashier stations to check out their groceries.
Customers attempting to enter the store were turned around, with staff stating the store had to undergo maintenance and would be closed throughout the weekend.
An employee who wished to remain anonymous stated mice have been spotted throughout the store for some time, including within the meat department and bakery department.
The investigation is ongoing, according to the health department, and at this time, the report has not been made public.
We will update with the report once it has been made available.
Smith's has yet to return comment regarding the closure or the extent of the infestation, including if any food or groceries could be contaminated from rodent exposure.
