Carson City School District to begin grading Pass or Fail for remainder of school year due to shut down
The Carson City School District announced Friday that it will be switching to a pass or fail grading system for students virtually working on their second semester of the 2019-2020 school year from home due to the COVID-19 mandated school shutdown.
Schools will continue to remain closed at least through May 1 according to the Governor’s directive. All schools in the Carson City School District are on distant learning programs, which includes paper packets for grades K-5 and the utilization of laptops distributed by the school district for older students.
Teachers have also been following up with through students individually either electronically or by telephone at least once a week, according to Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes during this week's virtual Town Hall Meeting.
The school district previously announced it would waive its testing requirements for the rest of the school year, which includes all testing used for accountability purposes, graduation requirements and federal reporting. This includes EOCs, ACTs, SBACs, and Career and College Ready assessments, according to the school district's announcement.
Switching to pass or fail grading system allows students who are college bound to continue on their educational course without needing the standard testing requirements.
