Stewart Hill 'S' receives new coat of paint thanks to student, adult volunteers preserving history

The “S” on the hill for the Stewart Community received a fresh coat of paint thanks to 20 youth volunteers as well as many adult volunteers last week.

The youth volunteers ranged in age from 5 years old to 18, and the volunteers included alumni, family members of alumni, Washoe nation employees, Stewart Community members including Chairman Blain Osorio, plus neighbors and residents of Carson City who wanted to lend a helping hand.

Despite starting with 15 gallons of paint, however, the team ran out before the S could be finished. The Nevada Indian Commission secured more paint, but they will wait to finish the S during Douglas County School District's Spring Break so more children and teenagers can be involved.

“From our perspective this is a total team effort, and the Nevada Indian Commission is extremely grateful that so many people take pride in the history of the Stewart Indian School and the Stewart Community for our Washoe relatives,” said Stacey Montooth, Executive Director of the Nevada Indian Commission.

The Douglas County School District Spring Break will begin April 12.
