Carson City area weather: Windy and cold with snow showers, warmup begins midweek
Gusty winds will arrive Sunday afternoon as a storm system moves into the region, bringing gusty winds, snow to the Sierra and rain with the possibility of snow showers along the lower valleys by early Monday morning.
A Wind Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday for the Greater Reno, Carson City, and Carson Valley areas. Winds will be from the west 20 mph to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph possible. Wind gusts for wind prone areas may reach 60 mph, National Weather Service forecasters said.
For Sunday and Monday, a band of snowfall will move into northern Washoe County between 3 and 6pm. This band of snowfall will then move into the greater Reno metro area by around 6pm, and continue through midnight, forecasters said. Snowfall amounts in these areas will vary from nothing up to 2 inches in the valleys and basins, and 2-4 inches for the foothills above 5,000 feet.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued from 7 p.m. Sunday night through 11 a.m. Monday morning for the greater Lake Tahoe area. Snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are possible at lake level and 40 to 10 inches above 7,000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 90 mph along Sierra ridges. The heaviest snowfall and strongest winds are expected Sunday evening, NWS forecasters said.
Motorists should plan on slippery road conditions that could impact the morning commute. For the latest road conditions see NVroads.com or call 511.
On Monday, there is a cold unstable airmass behind the front. This will lead to hit and miss snow showers throughout the region by the late morning through the early evening. Most locations will receive no accumulation, but a quick one inch is possible, NWS forecasters said.
Monday high and low temperatures will be upward of 20 to 25 degrees below average for early April. Add on the brisk northwest winds and it will feel more like mid-winter than mid-spring.
Snow showers and chilly conditions Monday and Tuesday will give way to a drying and warming trend the rest of next week, according to the weather service.
