Carson City area weather: Wind, rain, snow and cold likely to continue into next week
With spring having arrived Monday, forecasters looking ahead say the weather pattern of rain, wind, snow and below average temperatures will persist at least through the end of the month.
In the short term, chances for snow showers will continue into the weekend, mainly in the central and northern Sierra. Temperatures will remain well below normal, dropping to 10 to 20 degrees below average for this time of year, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
For Thursday, windy conditions will increase, with gusts up to 50 to 60 mph. Forecasters say mountain snow and valley rain showers will likely develop by Thursday afternoon. Chances for accumulating snow is greatest along the northern Sierra crest, with local areas of 3 to 8 inches possible. Elsewhere, accumulations will be little-to-none, NWS forecasters say.
Temperatures will remain well-below average, with overnight lows in the mid-to-upper 20s across lower valleys and single digits to teens in Sierra valleys some 10-15 degrees below average.
High temperatures this weekend in the greater Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas will be in the low 40s Friday through Sunday, and possibly warming up to the high 40s by Monday.
Forecasters say to expect winter-like temperatures and the active weather trend to continue. The weekend will likely bring intermittent snow showers and below average temperatures.
By Monday, the setup returns for another winter storm for the Sierra and western Nevada that extends through Wednesday, bringing renewed wind and snow impacts in the Sierra, slick roadways, and snow, with around a foot or more above 7,000 feet and at least an inch, to the valley floor.
At this time there are not any watches or warnings for the Carson City area and the Lake Tahoe Basin. That may change, however as forecasters get a better handle on upcoming weather systems. Check back for updates.
