Nevada recognizes March 22 as National Rehabilitation Counselor Appreciation Day
LAS VEGAS, NV - The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) join disability organizations nationwide in recognizing March 22 as National Rehabilitation Counselor Appreciation Day.
“I am pleased to recognize the men and women of Nevada’s Division of Rehabilitation for the vital contributions that rehabilitation counselors make to our workforce, and their compassion and perseverance is serving our citizens,” said Shelley Hendren, Administrator for the Rehabilitation Division. “All across our state and our country, rehabilitation counselors help make a difference in the lives of citizens by ensuring they all have an equal opportunity in pursuing their educational and career goals.”
Annually, Congress designates March 22 as National Rehabilitation Counselor Appreciation Day by the request of the National Rehabilitation Association (NRA).
DETR’s Rehabilitation Division is a state and federally funded program whose mission is to bring Nevadans together to promote barrier-free communities in which individuals with disabilities have access to opportunities for quality work and self-sufficiency. The Division has 46 Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors stationed statewide in each of the JobConnect offices plus the two rehabilitation district offices in Las Vegas and Reno. Last year the Division served a total of 4,981 individuals with disabilities.
Counselors work with individuals with disabilities to assess their skills, abilities and interests and provide counseling and guidance and support services to assist them to pursue goals in education and employment. Many clients are high school students with disabilities who are transitioning from school to work.
“Our counselors are highly skilled and become invested in helping many individuals with disabilities join the workforce,” said Janice John, Deputy Administrator for the Rehabilitation Division. “The work that the counselors do is highly rewarding and we are proud to take this opportunity to recognize them for their dedication and hard work.”
