— Tuesday Morning Walk Sponsored by Muscle Powered to Stewart Indian School and Cemetery. 9 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for its Tuesday weekly one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Meet in the parking lot at 5366 Snyder Ave. (in front of the Stewart Community Baptist Church) Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. If it rains, snows, or trail conditions are not safe, meet at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center (MAC) at 1860 Russell Way. — Museum in Carson City puts spotlight on Nevada’s cultural diversity at upcoming showcase. 10 to 4 p.m. Museums from around the state will converge on the Nevada State Museum in Carson City today for the 2019 Nevada Museum Showcase. The day-long event, a partnership between the Nevada Division of Museums and History and the Nevada Museums Association, is free and open to the public. The event brings together museums large and small from around the Silver State for an opportunity to promote and celebrate Nevada’s rich cultural landscape.
Participating museums will set up booths throughout the Nevada State Museum for visitors to discover, and each will offer information about their museum as well as some hands-on activities. The Nevada State Museum’s famous Coin Press No. 1 will be in operation all day long as part of the showcase’s celebration of history and culture. The Nevada State Museum is located at 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City.
Museums scheduled to participate include: Lost City Museum, the National Atomic Testing Museum, Fort Churchill State Historic Park and Buckland Station, Nevada Historical Society, Wilbur D. May Museum, the W.M. Keck Earth Science and Mineral Engineering Museum, Northeastern Nevada Museum, Nevada State Railroad Museum, Fleischmann Planetarium, Tonopah Mining Park, Natural History Museum, Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park, Las Vegas Springs Preserve, Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, Nevada State Museum, Children’s Museum of Las Vegas, Medical Museum, Fourth Ward School, Dayton Valley Historical Society and Comstock Foundation and the Nevada Museum of Art.
— Jennifer Baker to speak at Carson City Republican Women's luncheon. Carson City Republican Women will meet on Tuesday, March 19 to hear our featured speaker Jennifer Baker, Director of Communications for the Nevada Republican Caucus. Ms. Baker will give us an overview of the current legislative session as well as effective engagement for what is important. Our meeting will be held at the Casino Fandango grand ballroom with social time beginning at 11 a.m. and the meeting called to order at 11:30 a.m. This was an RSVP event with the deadline having now passed.
— Tuesday Evening Hike - Sonoma Park hosted by Muscle Powered. 5:30 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for its free leader-led hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors! Meet at 1003 Sonoma Street corner of Sonoma and Fremont. We will walk through the neighborhood. Bring a flashlight. Water and sturdy closed-toed shoes are required. For the winter, these hikes moved onto paved sidewalks and paths in Carson City and will be 4-6 miles in length. If it is raining or snowing, hikes will be cancelled. — Carson City group offers support, education to parents with children who have addictions. 6 p.m. A support group is restarting in Carson City for family members who have loved ones struggling with addictions. The group will meet at a new location on Tuesday nights, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City meeting room at 1925 N Carson St. PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) is a support group of parents helping parents. We meet every week to offer education and support for parents or spouses dealing with an addicted family member.
— Evening guided hike at Washoe Lake State Park. 6 p.m. Join Nevada State Park staff Tuesday, March 19 for a 2.5 mile guided hike through the sand dunes and enjoy views of Washoe Lake and Slide Mountain.
Reservations are required for this hike and can be made by calling (775) 687-4319 or e-mailing wlsp@parks.nv.gov. Participants should dress for the weather and wear sturdy hiking shoes, as most of this trail involves walking through loose sand.
— Big-Band Jazz X3: Mile High, CHS and CMS concert at Carson City Community Center. 7 p.m. It's "big-band jazz times three" when the Mile High Jazz Band, Carson High Jazz Band, and Carson Middle School Jazz Band present the 16th annual combined Jazz Extravaganza concert Tuesday, March 19 in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center. The Extravaganza is sponsored by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and the Carson City Band Association as a benefit for Carson City school instrumental music programs. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Tickets prices are $10 general admission and free for youth age 18 and under. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Carson High and Carson Middle School music students, at the Nevada Day Office (716 N. Carson Street), online at MileHighJazz.com, or at the door. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, March 29, 5-7 p.m. in the Sierra Room, and the artist will give a brief talk about his photography at 5:30 p.m. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.
— Recruiting underway for Carson City area volunteer foster grandparents. Ongoing. Many children in the Carson City area can benefit from the Seniors in Service Nevada's Foster Grandparent Program. Foster Grandparents are people 55 and over who enjoy spending time with children. “Grandmas” and “Grandpas” volunteer time in schools mentoring and tutoring children. — American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric CPR, AED, First Aid Training Hybrid Course, Western Nevada College, 9 a.m. Prepare for the unexpected with first aid training from the American Red Cross. Developed and taught by experts, this course will empower you to provide care when it's needed most. You will complete a portion of this course through the American Red Cross's award-winning online portal (this takes 2-3 hours), and complete the hands-on portion of the course on the WNC campus. The course will include basic first aid, CPR and AED skills to give you the confidence necessary to perform life-saving procedures when they're needed most. This course is OSHA-compliant and your certification is good for two years following course completion. This class is $70. — Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

— Reno artist work showcased at Carson City's Legislative Exhibition Gallery. Daily. Reno artist Kate O’Hara need only to open her door and look to the mountains to find inspiration for her creations. O’Hara’s exhibit, “Botanica Obscura,” can be seen for the next three weeks at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) inside the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City.
— Chinese woodcutters exhibit at Nevada State Museum in Carson City. In their heydays in the boom-and-bust mining culture of the late 1800s, the mining camps of Aurora, Nevada and nearby Bodie, California had a combined population of nearly 20,000. Keeping the thriving camps supplied was an ongoing challenge. A little-known piece of history of the two boomtowns — the role of the Chinese woodcutters who supplied firewood and charcoal to the camps — is the subject of a major new exhibit at the Nevada State Museum. “Fueling the Boom: Chinese Woodcutters in the Great Basin,” opens Friday in the museum’s South Gallery. The Nevada State Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, free for museum members and children 17 and younger. Parking is available in the free public lot on the west side of Curry St. behind the museum.
— Artists sought: Logo contest to celebrate Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery's 40th year. Calling all Graphic Artists: Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery is celebrating its 40th anniversary. NAA would like to have a shiny new graphic for its logo to use throughout the year and we need your help. We are offering a $250 award for the winning logo. We encourage you to visit the gallery located on the campus of the Brewery Art Center at 449 W. King Street in Carson City to get a feel for it. Some of the original members are still showing their art there. The graphic needs to have the ability to be reduced to 1.5” x 1.5” or 1” x 1.5” with a minimum of 600 ppi. Email the attachment with your finalized logo to naacarsoncity@gmail.comwith your name, phone number and email address printed in the text of the email no later than March 19, 2019.
— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.
— Nevada Artists Association Winter Show. Daily. The winners of the 2019 Nevada Artists Association Winter Show have been announced. The public is invited to visit the gallery at the Brewery Arts Center now through March 22 to see all the submitted pieces. NAA Gallery, 449 W. King Street.
— Western Nevada College Continuing Education offers fitness program. R.I.P.P.E.D. is designed to help everybody meet their ultimate fitness goals in a super fun group exercise environment. This 1 hour class combines Resistance, Interval, Power, Plyometrics, Endurance, core and offers a very important Diet program on the Rippedplanet website. R.I.P.P.E.D is for every-body & every fitness level.
Cardio, Weights Fun & Done! Students should plan to eat a snack or small meal about 45 minutes before class, bring a water bottle, towel, and wear exercise clothes and shoes. — WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
