Carson City sheriff's deputies make arrests for suspected DUI and drug offenses

A 24-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday for suspicion of DUI, open container and failure to obey a traffic control device, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report.

A deputy observed a sedan in front of him while traveling northbound on Stewart Street. The driver failed to come to a complete stop at the stop sign, the report states.

The driver appeared to realize he didn't stop and slammed on his brake, stopping with most of his car in the crosswalk, the report states. The officer initiated a traffic stop at Lee and Stewart streets.

The deputy made contact with the driver, who identified himself through a Nevada driver's license. The deputy could smell an odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The officer asked if he had been drinking and the man advised he had not. The deputy told the man he could smell alcohol. The man stated that it was probably because he had empty beer cans in his vehicle.

The man stepped out of the vehicle. As the officer spoke he could smell alcohol on his breath. The man admitted to having two Modelo 24-ounce each "tall boys."

He submitted to standardized field sobriety tests and submitted a preliminary breath test of .099. He was arrested for suspicion of DUI. At jail he submitted to evidentiary tests, with his first breath sample a .116 and second .117. Bail: $1,416.

He state he was driving down Highway 50 and stated he thought he lost control of his truck because of black ice. The officer told the man that himself and another deputy drove the same highway and did not experience black ice, the report states.

As the deputy spoke he could smell an odor of alcohol coming from the man's breath and observed his eyes were red. The officer asked the man if he had consumed any alcohol or drugs that night. The man denied any use/consumption, the arrest report states.

The officer asked if he would submit to standardized field sobriety tests. The man stated he would not. He was asked asked if he would submit to standardized field sobriety tests and again he stated he would not. The officer asked if he consumed alcohol that night and the man stated he would not answer the question. The officer asked the man if he would submit to an eye test, which he stated he would.

The deputy performed the test, and observed 6 out of 6 clues. The man would not submit to any other SFSTs. The officer asked the man if he would submit to a preliminary breath test, which he declined. He was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI.

The deputy spoke with a witness to the crash on the telephone who had been released earlier from the scene. The witness stated that he was traveling westbound on Highway 50 when he observed Cullen lose control of the truck and crashed into the wall. He stated he turned around at Golf Club Drive and contacted the man, who was still seated in the truck. The deputy observed a cup containing an alcoholic beverage in the cup holder of the center console, which the woman said that it belonged to her boyfriend. The officer asked the woman to exit the vehicle, which she did. The officer could smell an odor of alcohol on her breath and her eyes were red and watery. The woman braced against the bumper of her car for support, the report states.

The sergeant informed the deputy the woman had driven through the stop sign at Gordon Street and North Edmonds without coming to a complete stop then came to a stop at Fairview and Highway 50, passing the white line.

Once she had the right of way she turned left (west) onto Highway 50 and straddled the line separating lanes from the turn before the sergeant activated his emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop, the arrest report states.

The deputy read the woman the qualifying questions for the standardized field sobriety tests, which she stated she had sprained her ankle two years prior and that it still impeded her ability to walk and caused a limp, the report states.
