Carson High School student wins Rotary Club of Carson City speech contest
Carson City high school student Penelope Truell took home the top prize at the Rotary Club of Carson City’s annual speech contest. Truell is home schooled and attends one class at Carson High School.
This year’s topic which is chosen by Rotary Club members was “"How have you Imagined Working Together to better the lives of others, and how did you implement your idea?"
Truell says it’s important for young people to develop strong speaking skills. “It’s so important to be able to effectively advocate for yourself and other people,” she says. “The ability to diplomatically communicate allows us to have better opportunities within our everyday lives, and build a better future for generations to come!”
Truell was awarded a cash prize for her first-place win. She will now go on to compete at the area level.
The Rotary Club of Carson City hosts this competition, as well as others such as a music competition, as part of its commitment to serving and supporting young people in our community. The speech contest gives young people to gain valuable public speaking and critical thinking skills.
