Tourists taste test testes at Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest
From far and wide, thousands came to Virginia City this weekend for the annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest.
For those not in the know, Rocky Mountain Oysters are a special delicacy founded by old west pioneers, made of battered and fried bull testicles.
The tradition dates back to early expansion of European settlers who came to the West and realized they would need to be thrifty if they were to survive the harsh, high desert environments, and so they never wasted any part of an animal if they could help it.
And so was birthed the Rocky Mountain Oyster, which later begat the Rocky Mountain Oyster Festival in Virginia City.
Each year around St. Paddy’s Day, tourists pour into the comstock, donning green and snacking on old west delicacies.
In addition, the Storey County Volunteer Fire Department is raising funds throughout the day, which they use to support the museum as well as to supply much needed equipment to the fire department.
