Carson City's historic 'Adele's' building will not be saved despite donations, volunteers
According to Shannon Cord with the Carson City Historical Society, the historic Adele’s building will not be saved despite the efforts of many volunteers and contributors.
The historic building suffered a fire in 2019 that, due to smoke damage and insurance issues, was not able to be recovered. It was set for demolition, until a group of activists form the Carson City Historical Society sought to save the building and have it moved to a new location.
According to Cord, the costs turned out to be far too high to move the building to a new location.
The Carson City Historical Society was able to raise $22,000 in under two months and they were able to line up a buyer for the building. However, the estimated costs to move the building were far under the real costs and it became unfeasible economically, said Cord.
A spokesperson from the Historical Society said an official statement will be released next Wednesday.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce that the building of Adele’s will not be saved, said Cord. The Adele's building was owned by Charlie and Karen Abowd, which operated the successful restaurant for 40 years.
“The donations will be refunded and we want to thank everyone out there from all around who gave with true intent and an open heart to see history get saved,” said Cord in a Facebook post about the building. “Even though we were not able to accomplish that this time around, we hope that you would be willing to donate or volunteer the next time our community needs to gather and save history once again. The Carson City Historical Society would like to give a big heartfelt thank you to Jackson’s Gas Station for being so willing to help us where we needed it in order to try and save the building. And we want to thank Lepori construction for also working with us on timelines to try and save the building. Without the help of Jackson’s gas Station and Lepori construction, we would not have been able to even get as far as we did.”
A date for demolition of the building is unknown at this time.
“Thank you all for your love, support, donations and time volunteered to be part of New History saving Old History,” said Cord. “May we never have to meet like this again. And if we ever do, it would be an honor to work with you.”
