NHP Northern Command West awarded Regional School Zone Safety grant
The Nevada Highway Patrol and other Nevada law enforcement agencies participating in the Regional School Zone Safety Initiative will be increasing enforcement and education efforts to both pedestrians and drivers regarding school zone safety.
The Regional School Zone Safety Initiative is a coordinated effort between Sparks Police Department, Reno Police Department, Washoe County School District Police Department, and the Nevada Highway Patrol to reduce the number of crashes and eliminate fatalities due to vehicle collisions occurring in and around Washoe County’s school zones.
The Nevada Highway Patrol has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety. This grant is the result of a devastating 2019/2020 school year for Washoe County School District.
Between March and August, 31 injury crashes involving students traveling to or from school occurred; three of which were major injury crashes and one was a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old Wooster High School student. Troopers will be looking for traffic offenses in an effort to make school zones safer for students, families, and staff.
The Nevada Highway Patrol remains dedicated to bringing the number of fatalities on our roadways to zero through promoting safe pedestrian and motorist behavior. Whether you are in a vehicle or on foot, stay alert and safely share the road.
