Silver City Winter and Spring 2017 News

Silver City, Nevada - Silver City, a community located in Lyon County within the historic Comstock region near Virginia City, always has a busy schedule of unique arts and culture events for the public. Below are highlights of some upcoming winter and spring events.

Cemetery News:

Silver City Arts group news:

Exhibition: Acclaimed local artist Larry Kotik will have an exhibition of his paintings at the Silver City School House on Saturday, May 6, 2017.

Monthly Acoustic Jam: Bring your instruments to the Silver City School House and jam on the 4th Saturday of each month from 3pm to 5pm.

Concert News:

Save the Date for Gurf Morlix Concert: Evangeline Elston and Dr. Robert Elston are organizing another concert at the Silver City School House. Folk and blues legend Gurf Morlix will offer a show on April 13 at 7pm, as part of a CD release celebration for his new album The Soul & The Heal. Gurf is known for being Lucinda William’s guitar player as well as a musical director and producer. He’s a song writer who plays guitar and a dozen other instruments. In 2000 he began recording his own work and has since produced nine albums. He now lives in Texas and is identified with the Austin music scene. Proceeds support the school house and future music productions there. Suggested donation $12-$25. A Yellow Truck and Evangeline Presents production.

Resident Artist Program in Silver City news:

Painting of Silver City at Nevada Legislature: Artwork by Sophie Scott of New Zealand is on display at the Nevada State Legislative Building in Carson City during the 2017 Legislative session through June 4th, 2017. Look for it on the third floor near Ways and Means. Sophie’s painting, based on an 1860s photograph of Silver City, was created while she was a resident artist in Silver City in 2015. It was previously displayed, along with about a dozen other paintings and stencils, during a well attended show at the Silver City School House sponsored by the Resident Artist Program. A painter and printmaker, Sophie has a BFA from the Ilam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury. In other good news, Sophie will be back at the Resident Artist Program in Silver City in Autumn of 2017.

Journalist from Denmark To Visit: In March the Resident Artist Program will have a visit from journalist Peter Krogh Andersen of Denmark. This is Peter’s 4th time crossing the U.S. Last year, he traveled across the U.S. interviewing people about the Presidential election, American health care, and other issues and publishing a number of features based on the interviews (find those articles in the Danish newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad and on his own site, A Dane Passed By). Peter has also lived in Lebanon and Turkey, has traveled in Syria, Egypt and Somalia, and has biked from Copenhagen to Greece. He has a Master’s degree from the University of Southern Denmark in International Politics, with a focus on the Middle East. His dissertation was on Turkish foreign policy. He also attended Bilkent Üniversitesi, with a focus on Turkey and International Politics, and the American University of Beirut with a focus in Middle Eastern Studies. His undergraduate degree in journalism is from the University of Southern Denmark.

In late March he’ll offer a talk in Silver City with a slide show of photos from his trips, followed by questions and answers and discussion with the audience. The date of the event, which will be hosted by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City, will be announced in March.

Display of Work by Visiting Artists: For those who missed a December 2016 show with a sample of artwork, essays, poems, assemblages, and photographs created by visiting artists at the Resident Artist Program in Silver City, some of the items are on display at the Silver City Post Office through March. The display includes poetry about Silver City by former Utah Poet Laureate David Lee; photographs by Brian Schorn, Marielle Toll and Ava Covington; essays by author/ artist Scott MacLeod and internationally acclaimed photographer Frances Melhop; plus drawings and paintings by London-based artists Stewart Easton and Claire Scully, Oakland-based artist Scott MacLeod and New Zealand-based artist Sophie Scott.

Silver City Small Actions Committee News:

Post Card Writing Event March 5th: The Silver City Small Action Committee is hosting a postcard writing social gathering on Sunday, March 5th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Silver City School House Community Center, 385 High Street. The event is designed to give the wider communities of Dayton, Virginia City, Mound House and Carson City the opportunity to meet other concerned citizens and take action through letter writing. The first day of Carson City's Murals and Music Festival 2024 is bursting with color around town. The Festival, presented by Brewery Arts Center, continues through the weekend.

During the Carson City School Board meeting of trustees held Tuesday night, a public commenter brought forth an issue that had occurred earlier this week at Eagle Valley Middle School.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office Investigation Division is asking for the public's help identifying the suspect or suspects involved in an attempted Sept. 11 break-in and damage to a truck in the 2700 block of Northgate in Carson City.

This Saturday, Sept. 28, Carson City will host its third annual 5K Walk/Run to Remember benefit for the Northern Nevada Alzheimer's Association.

In addition to the race, there will be food trucks, live music, vendors and more.

CARSON CITY — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week released the 2023 Adult Obesity Prevalence Maps. The maps show Nevada’s adult obesity prevalence for 2023 is 30.8 percent, a decrease from 2022 (33.5 percent) and 2021 (31.3 percent) but still higher than all reported rates from 2011-2020.

It takes a village, or in the case of Lake Tahoe, it takes "Team Tahoe" to get the funding needed to protect the Jewel of the Sierra. On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives reauthorized the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act.

Flowers, bees, information on pollinators

Students are now several weeks into the school year at Carson High School, with the newest rule firmly in place: a complete ban of phones both inside and outside the classroom during school hours.

The introduction of the Yondr pouch was a controversial one, with some students and parents protesting the idea. However, since its implementation, administration, teachers, and surprisingly the students who Carson Now spoke with have agreed the new policy has been extremely positive.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife, along with the Animal Ark Wildlife Sanctuary and Nature Care, are saddened to inform the public that the Davis Bear’s condition worsened substantially since Friday, Sept. 20. Thus, it was determined by Animal Ark’s veterinarian, Dr. Lesli Spears and NDOWs Wildlife Health Specialist, Dr. Nate LaHue, that it was in the animal’s best interest to be euthanized.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization. NAMI Nevada is the state organization providing support and guidance for the NAMI Nevada affiliates throughout the state, including Southern Nevada, Reno, and Western Nevada.

At Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, the mission is clear: to provide essential services to those in need by providing a hand up, not a handout.

Vital to this mission are the three food banks operated by FISH throughout Northern Nevada aimed at supporting community members struggling with food insecurity.

As fall begins, the Washoe State Tree Nursery will reopen on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 9:30 a.m. Located at 885 Eastlake Boulevard in New Washoe City, this nursery is operated by the Nevada Division of Forestry and offers native and adapted plants for landscaping and conservation.

It was another great Pooch Plunge! Giving back to the community and being with the people they love is what is at the root of the Carson Follies, a long-standing community production that is gearing up for its 26th year with "Ocean Commotion" at the Bob Boldrick Theater inside the Carson City Community Center the first weekend in October.

A vehicle pursuit that began Monday evening in Douglas County ended with a crash and foot pursuit near the frontage road area at the junction of I-580 and South Carson Street. The suspect is in custody.

On Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024, Capitol City Gun Club in Carson City will host a “Duck Season Tune-Up” Three Shot Sporting Clays Shoot with pump and semi-automatic shotgun classes.

Heading into this first full week of fall, temperatures around Carson City and surrounding counties will feel like early summer, with daytime highs in mid 80s for the next few days and the low to mid 70s for the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
