Senator Square: Carson High School's Honors English students consider the power of words

Every class day, the Honors English I students of two Carson High School English Language Arts teachers begin their class period by responding to a direct quote said or written by a well-known individual from the past or present.

Students are learning about the benefits of acquiring a high level of cognitive vocabulary in order to enable their brains to think, reason, and respond verbally and in writing, not to mention the fact quotes from respected individuals encourage, inspire, and motivate people, young and old alike, to act. In the article “The Science Behind Why Inspirational Quotes Motivate Us,” writer and editor Gwen Moran said, “When things get tough, many people turn to a motivational quote for a bit of inspiration.”

A few of the quotes students have responded to: Emily Bronte, from Wuthering Heights, says “Which is the more powerful emotion, love or hate? Hal Urban asks, “What do we have to celebrate today?” Frederick Langbridge posits, “Two men look out through the same bars; one sees the mud and one the stars, Helen Keller points out, “Keep your face to the sunshine, and you cannot see the shadows,” and Fred Rogers said, “Deep and simple are far, far more important than shallow and complicated and fancy.” Next, after students looked at definition and context for vocabulary words 61 – 70, they were asked to create a video telling a story, acting out, all 10 words.

According to elearningindustry.com, “A learner is likely to remember only 10% of textual content, 65% of visual content, but 95% of audio-visual content…this mode of learning effectively enhances self-learning and engages learners’ attention throughout courses.” Students had a blast, and it is one of the assignments they remember most at the end of the year.

CHEER TEAM TAKES FIRST PLACE IN TWO EVENTS
The Carson High Cheer team competed in the Northern Nevada Cheer Competition Feb. 5 and came in first place for all girls show cheer and first place for group stunt division. These CHS athletes are headed to Anaheim to compete in the USA Spirit Nationals Cheer Competition Friday and Saturday.

PARENTS STILL HAVE TIME TO PURCHASE SENIOR ADS
This is just a friendly reminder: Senior ads are due Feb. 28 or until the reserved pages are full. Currently, 9 1/2 pages out of 16 that are full, so they are going fast, and no one who wants an ad is happy after being denied. What are senior ads?  Senior ads are designed by “you,” and they celebrate “your” senior's K-12 experience and graduation.

WHO WILL BECOME MR. CARSON HIGH 2022
It is time once again to make a big decision, one of the biggest of the year. Who will become the next Mr. Carson High? Candidates for this off-the-wall event are Nolan Olson, Parsa Hadjighasemi, Roberto Zambrano, Clinton Dewitt, Denton Buckley, Eric Hickson, Adam Salik, Damiian Ioane Tuia Hayden Breiter, and Giovanni Arce.

There is not only a Mr. Carson High, there will be the Almost Mr. Carson High, the Nearly Mr. Carson High, a Mr. Talent, a Mr. Personality, a Mr. Photogenic, the People’s Choice, a Sold the Most Tickets, and a cheerleader. Senior boys, who are contestants in this pageant of performance, will receive prizes including a full prom package worth $500, photo shoots, and other awesome prizes and gifts.

According to CHS nurse and cheer coach Sheila Story, “Last year, the Mr. Carson High production was the Senior Project of Teanna Calloway and proved to be very successful.” Story added, “Ms. Calloway worked diligently developing the tickets, script, dances, theme and overall production”. A grateful thanks will again go out to sponsors and Carson High School Athletics and Administration for their support. Past judges and MC's include Sheriff Kenny Furlong, Mayor Bob Crowell, UNR Cheer Coach, Haley Canfield, School Board Member Stacie Wilke-McCulloch, and WNC President Dr. Solis, MC's Nathan Tolbert and Robben Williams along with Albert Jacquez the Tabulator for results.

Reserve March 4 at 7 p.m. to visit the Carson City Community Center for an evening filled with great talents and entertainment; multiple CHS Senior boys are competing for the title of Mr. Carson High 2022. GEARING UP FOR LIVE THEATRE ARTS PERFORMANCE 
CHS Theatre Arts gears up for their next live performance. This fall, CHS Theatre Arts rocked the stage with She Kills Monsters, and they are back at it again this spring bringing Broadway back to the stage with a Musical Revue of epic proportions. Featuring songs and dances from current and favorite Broadway Hits, the CHS Spring Musical Showcase is Carson High's first live musical theatre production since the start of the pandemic.

Last year's virtual production of Annie was a huge success, and these resilient young people cannot wait to share their hard work and passion for the stage in front of a live audience. The CHS Spring Musical Showcase will run April 1 at 7 p.m. and April 2 at 2 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center located at 851 East William Street in Carson City. UPCOMING EVENTS AT CHS
To interested businesses in applying by March 1, Carson City School District is hosting a student job fair with at least 1000 students attending April 6 from 9 to Noon at CHS and Pioneer Academy. This will be a great opportunity for business owners to meet potential student employees, for students to find available job opportunities and how to apply.

CCSD Work Based Learning Coordinator Marc Rodina is recruiting businesses and industries to participate in this event, whether they are looking for one employee or several. TESLA TO DISCUSS JOB AND APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Attention CHS Seniors and Juniors, representatives from Tesla will be at CHS March 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the CHS Library discussing employment and apprenticeship opportunities. This is a fantastic opportunity for seniors moving forward after graduation and for juniors thinking about what they will do in the near future as well. This apprenticeship offers CHS graduates full-time work at Tesla while earning a scholarship in advanced manufacturing and other areas.

CARSON CITY COMMUNITY FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE RETURNS TO CHS
“A Mystical Evening in Greece”, featuring Hercules and Megara, Annual Father-Daughter Ball at CHS, a community-wide event for all ages, is coming April 22 from 6 to 9:00 p.m. in the CHS Big Gym. Tickets are $40 per father and daughter and an additional $10 for each additional daughter.

The event has sold out each year prior to Covid and will definitely sell out this year. Order tickets by going to eventbrite.com and searching for “Father-Daughter Ball – Carson City.” Online ticket purchase fee applies. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the CHS Big Gym entrance.

Only cash or checks will be taken for in-person ticket purchases. Also, actors will be taking professional photos of fathers and their little princesses; light desserts will be served. This event is a fundraiser for the following CHS Organizations: Future Business Leaders of America, SkillsUSA Web Design, Leadership, and Photography. Tickets do not go on sale until March 1. ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
CHS Athletic Department’s Athletes of the Week are Anthony Garrobo and Lucas Wold for Varsity Wrestling. These athletes and all students who participate in school functions through leadership, clubs, and sports deserve a high level of recognition and congratulations.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to CHS Junior, Kairy Orozco Ortiz on being nominated Student of the Week. According to CHS Full Body Conditioning, Cardio Dance, and Freshman Seminar and Health teacher Angela Maw, “Kairy saw a student from another PE class who was clearly upset and she gave her a bottle of water in an effort to help her feel better and noticed and she mattered.” Maw added “Kairy’s kindness was so appreciated.” Employees within Carson City School District nominate the CHS Student of the Week, and it is often the teachers who do the nominating, though anyone in the district may do so emailing pbrady@carson.k12.nv.us. Congratulations to Kairy Orozco Ortiz on being nominated CHS Student of the Week.

SENIOR IN THE SPOTLIGHT
This week’s Senior in the Spotlight shines on Jaredh Lopez. When Jaredh walks in to my office, she brings a breath of fresh air with her engaging smile, friendly demeanor and incredible communication skills. She is confident, honest and open minded, and most recently modeled these when she shared she has not yet committed to her path after graduating from Carson High.

She believes she has narrowed it down to two very diverse options. She will join the Navy and aim for Aerographer Mate training or attend UNR as a first generation student and study to become a Secondary History Teacher. This is Jaredh’s fourth year enrolled in Military Science and is the Battalion Supply Officer. Chief Dan Ingram reports her hard work and attention to detail makes her highly successful in managing the clothing supply system for over 200 cadets. Jaredh is a strong advocate for others to participate in the program as there are many leadership positions, many fun volunteering events, and many opportunities to explore future careers.

Jaredh has earned a GPA of 4.39, taking 12 Honors or Advanced Placement classes while also working at Raley’s for the past 1 ½ years. Jaredh cites her mom, dad, and two brothers as the cornerstone of all she does. Her face shines with pride and love as she describes each of them and declares, “Family is first!”. Congratulations to Jaredh Lopez on becoming this week’s Senior in the Spotlight. CHS is proud.
