Gusty winds prompt advisory for Carson City region, Sierra under winter storm warning
While much of the Sierra is under a Winter Storm Warning, strong wind gusts in Carson City and throughout much of Western Nevada has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Wind Advisory for the region through 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Winds are blowing south to southwest 15 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Wind gusts to 65 mph or more can be expected in wind-prone areas along Highway 395 and Interstate 580, including between Cold Springs and Stead, Interstate 580 south of Reno, and in the Virginia Highlands.
For travelers, vehicles over 9 feet high are prohibited along I-580 through Washoe Valley near Bowers Mansion Interchange and along Old US-395 near Davis Creek Park.
The advisory is for the greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon County as well as Virginia City. The weather service advises residents to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans before winds blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries or candles in the event of a power outage.
Meanwhile, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Thursday for the Lake Tahoe Basin and much of the Sierra. Periods of moderate to heavy snow are expected. A lull in heavier snowfall is expected from late Wednesday morning into Wednesday evening before heavier snow develops again Wednesday night.
Additional snow accumulation of 3 to 8 inches, except 8 to 16 inches above 7,000 feet west of Highway 89. Winds gusting up to 45 mph at times, with gusts to around 100 mph for exposed Sierra ridges.
Travel could be very difficult with road closures and long delays, especially Wednesday morning. Roads could become mainly wet for a time Wednesday afternoon and evening before snow-covered roads return Wednesday night. Strong winds could cause tree damage and periods of very low visibility.
Avoid travel if possible, you could be stuck in your vehicle for many hours. If you must travel, prepare for long delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing. If you stay home, have a backup plan in case of power outages.
The latest road conditions can be obtained by going to NVRoads.com or calling 511.
