Carson City Weather: After lackluster February, March may roar in with rain and snow
Enjoy the sunshine and late winter warm weather this weekend. Next weekend may be an entirely different story as we head into what many weather watchers dub “Miracle March.”
The National Weather Service in Reno says its weather models show a new round of storms making landfall into California and Nevada by next weekend with the potential for heavy mountain snow and strong winds areawide.
Before the long drought, the region has experienced years where March produced blockbuster winter storms, especially notable among Lake Tahoe skiers and boarders, piling the Sierra with snow and creating solid snowpack for spring and early summer runoff.
The weather service says conditions look favorable for “atmospheric river” systems through at least the middle of the month. Next weekend’s storm may be just the beginning, the weather service says, giving a much needed boost to the snowpack after a lackluster February.
Northern California and Western Nevada may see weather changes beginning Thursday, with some snow in the higher elevations. Into the weekend is when a stronger weather system will likely develop, with the potential for arrival early Saturday or Sunday.
The weather service notes there is a potential for the storm system to move on a southerly track. Another weather model shows a more direct impact north, bringing Sierra snow, rain and fairly strong winds to the region. Those planning to travel next weekend should stay tuned as the storms could affect travel over the Sierra.
