Man arrested for driving 100 mph down Spooner with airbags deployed, a .404 BAC, and refusal to stop for deputies
A 28-year-old Incline Village man was arrested early Thursday morning in the 4100 block of S. Carson Street for a second DUI, failure to maintain a lane, driving without a valid driver’s license, driving with an open container in the vehicle, failure to lead to an emergency vehicle, and driving without proof of insurance.
According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to upper Spooner in an attempt to locate a possible DUI driver.
The reporting party stated they observed a black sedan with its airbags deployed driving at a rate of about 100 mph.
Deputies located a vehicle with the side airbags deployed and a headlight out traveling east on spooner. Deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop at the stop light at Spooner and Carson Street. However, when the light turned green, the vehicle continued through the intersection, traveling north on Carson Street.
Deputies followed the vehicle and noted that it could not maintain its lane and was traveling between 35 and 45 miles per hour. The vehicle came to a stop at the stop light at Carson and Clearview. When the light turned green, the vehicle made a wide left turn in which it almost crashed into a traffic pole, according to the report.
Prior to hitting the traffic pole, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop. Deputies exited the vehicle and attempted to make contact with the driver. However, the subject put their vehicle in reverse and, concerned the subject was going to back into the deputy’s vehicle, the deputy ran back into the cruiser and also placed it in reverse.
The vehicle went back into drive and travelled west on Clearview before making a right turn into a gas station. The driver parked the vehicle in a parking spot behind a fast food restaurant. As the deputy exited their patrol vehicle again, the vehicle travelled forward and hit the cement wall.
The deputy yelled multiple times to open the door without success, according to the report. They could not see the driver due to the airbags being deployed.
Eventually the driver unlocked the vehicle. The deputy told him to exit the vehicle, but he did not comply. When the deputy lifted the airbags, the driver was lighting a cigarette. The deputy grabbed both of the driver’s hands and pulled him out of the vehicle.
As soon as the deputy grabbed onto his wrists and pulled him out, the man’s legs became limp. The deputy thought he was injured or having a medical emergency and called for the fire department to assist.
Inside the vehicle deputies located a Modelo tall can on the floor of the passenger seat and there was a liquid spilled around the vehicle. A mild odor of an alcoholic beverage was emitting from the vehicle, according to the report.
In making contact with the man, they smelled a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his person, he had red watery eyes and slurred speech. Deputies asked why he crashed his vehicle and he wouldn’t answer. The vehicle had damage to the front and both driver and passenger side. Airbags in the front and side had been deployed.
The man provided a preliminary breath test which resulted in a .404 BAC level.
He was taken to the hospital for medical clearance and had his blood drawn for an additional BAC test.
Dispatch advised the man had been previously charged with a DUI on Nov. 29, 2017.
