Carson City Weather: High Wind Warning issued for Wednesday ahead of storm
Gusty winds ahead of a winter storm has prompted a High Wind Warning by the National Weather Service for the Carson City region beginning Wednesday morning.
Winds will begin to increase in the morning then becoming strong and gusty through Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to the weather service. Winds will be from the south 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 60 mph. Wind prone areas could see gusts up to 70 mph, according to the weather service.
Strong winds could impact travel, especially high profile vehicles along Highway 395 and Interstate 580 and I-80. The weather service advises to secure outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans. Bring in the small pets, charge up your smart phone devices and have flashlights and candles ready in the event of a power outage.
Weather models are still on track to bring a moderately strong winter storm across the region Wednesday and Thursday. Winter watches remain in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin as well as Alpine and Mono counties. The timing for the system has slowed with the main wave to speed up through overnight Wednesday into early Thursday morning.
Snow total accumulation is expected in the Sierra. The Lake Tahoe Basin could get anywhere from 12 to 20 inches above 7,000 feet and 4 to 10 inches below 7,000 feet. Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton and Reno areas could see an inch of snow, while Virginia City could see up to 3 inches of snow.
