Happenings around the capital city include a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, Valentine-themed activities at Carson Mall, a Muscle Powered hike at Clear Creek Trail, Pilates at the Brewery Arts Center, the second of three Carson City school zone modification meetings and more.

Here's what's happening Thursday:
— Gifts, Chocolate, Jewelry and More, Oh My: Valentine-themed activities featured at Carson Mall. Dail. Carson Mall, 1223 South Carson Street, in Carson City is hosting a series of Valentine events, now daily through Feb. 16, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The mall will feature vendors, free Valentine Photos by Magical Moments, and chocolate dipped strawberries. From Feb. 12 through Feb. 14, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., visit inside the mall and make a Valentine for a loved one. Then, make another Valentine for a Senior that will be delivered to local retirement homes. On Feb. 15 Carson Mall will host Family Bingo Night. Proceeds will benefit Carson High School’s Safe and Sober Grad Night. Carson Host Lions will be selling truffles and other candies for your sweetheart. Scroll and click on the fliers for details. — Healthy Communities Coalition meets Thursday, topics include census, vaping and alcohol laws. 9 a.m. Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties holds a breakfast meeting on the second Thursday of each month at 9am in various locations in Storey and Lyon counties. HCC’s February meeting is Thursday, Feb. 13, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Street, Silver Springs, Nev. Kim Burgess, Partnership Specialist with the U.S. Census’ Community Partnership and Engagement Program, will provide an overview of the 2020 Census, which is coming soon (April 1, 2020) and will discuss the importance of a complete and accurate count for the community. The data from the Decennial Census is crucial for determining the allocation of $675 billion in federal funds as well as reapportionment. Census results are used to determine representation in Congress, and they help inform how billions of dollars are distributed for hospitals, schools, roads, and more. Also on the agenda, Wendy Madson, Executive Director of HCC, will explain social host laws in Nevada. The laws of the state of Nevada require hosts to take care in preventing minors from drinking alcohol at their homes, properties or events. This includes, but is not limited to, verifying the age of guests. Alisha Moss, HCC’s Prevention Coordinator, will offer an overview of the work HCC’s Stand Tall youth leaders in Lyon County have done to educate their peers and communities on the health effects of vaping.
— Capital City Arts Initiative to present 'Impact' exhibition featuring Lake Tahoe artist Paula Chung. Daily through May 28. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Impact" by artist Paula Chung at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition will be in the gallery through May 28, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paula Chung’s Impact works address violence on sports fields, battlefields, and the streets. Through the use of medical imagery, she illustrates how violence affects us all.
— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'Photo Finished 2020' exhibition. Daily. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Photo Finished 2020, at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public through March 26, 2020, Mondays - Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The Carson High students include Jackie Garza, Ansley Griffin, Karla Herrera, Meagan Kiesow, Kayee Konze, Kailee Luschar, Vanessa Martinez, Haley Trost, and Valerie Wamsley. The artists are all students in Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photography class.
— Cardio and Strength Connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Wellness. If you've had problems with your heart, or have diabetes, a healthy lifestyle is the best way to get you feeling like you should. We've created Cardio and Strength Connection to help you develop a healthy exercise program in a safe and comfortable environment. Come join us every Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Health and Wellness Institute, Suite 250, 1470 Medical Pkwy. Cost: $10 monthly.
— Nevada Artists Association New Year's Show. NAA presents it's New Year's Show with 124 entries by member artists. Additionally, water colorist, Melanie Walters and potter, Nancy Brownrigg are our Featured Artists and have their exhibits on the back wall of the Gallery. These shows run through Feb. 14. The Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday, except Monday. — Carson City Library hosts Family Storytime. 11:30 to 12:15 a.m. These are both the same and last 45 minutes. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Carson Street.
— Muscle Powered's Thursday Hike Feb. 13 at Clear Creek Trail. 3 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. The Thursday, Feb. 13 hike is at the Clear Creek Trail, lower end. Meet at the trailhead for the Clear Creek trail, 1/2 mile west of Jacks Valley Elementary School on Jacks Valley Road, 1.8 miles west of Hwy 395. Thursday hikes start at 3:00 PM and are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and closed-toed shoes are required. Hat and poles recommended If weather conditions are bad hikes will be cancelled. Check www.musclepowered.org/calendar or Facebook. — LEGO Club for kids at Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street.
— Pilates mat classes offered at the Brewery Arts Center. 5:30 p.m. If you are looking to strengthen your abdomen, hips, legs, arms, as well as maintain good posture, then Pilates is for you! It also has a strong mind/body connection that gives you an low impact targeted core workout. You’ll get stronger with more sculpted muscles and gain flexibility which can give you a better sense of well being all around. Pilates is great for any fitness level or age as it can be tailored to your individual needs. Prices: $10, Drop-in, $6 class when purchased by the month or $80 for 10-pack. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Brewer Arts Center, Upstairs Ballroom, 449 W. King Street, Carson City.
— Carson City School District to host meeting over proposed middle school zone modification. With anticipation of the modification to middle school attendance zones within the Carson City School District, district officials and administrators are inviting parents and families to attend one of three meetings to discuss the intricacies of the rezoning as well as variance options for families with older siblings already attending a specific middle school. The second forum is Thursday at Carson Middle School, at 6:00 p.m., in the library and again on Feb. 27, at Fremont Elementary School, 5:30 p.m. in the library.
