Master Sushi Chefs open Carson City’s first ever Poke restaurant
PokeDoke, Carson City’s first ever Poke restaurant, opened Feb. 4 at their new location on Topsy Lane.
The restaurant is a collaboration between master sushi chefs Osu Kwon, the man behind Reno’s Hiroba and Carson City’s Tomo, and Master Chef Marlon Alvarado.
“We’re the fish guys so you know your fish is in good hands,” said Co-Owner Katherine Alvarado. “Unlike other Poke restaurants who get frozen, pre cut fish, our fish is sushi grade, fresh and cut daily. People in the community have known us through the years and so far they’ve continued to tell us how happy they are we’re opening this new restaurant.”
Poke (pronounced Poh-Keh) has been on the rise in recent years, an off shoot of sushi that originated in Hawaiian cuisine. The literal translation of Poke is “cut into chunks” which is precisely what Poke is: raw fish cut into chunks, served as either an appetizer or a main course in Hawaiian traditional cuisine.
While traditional Poke is simply seasoned fish, as with most cuisine it has been tweaked and adapted, and now most Poke Bars serve Poke Bowls, which include raw seasoned fish, rice, and additions such as avocado, onions, jalapeño, and a choice from several different sauces. Sort of a deconstructed sushi roll that you build yourself.
“People know us, and they know our quality,” said Marlon. “I know what quality fish looks like, and it is all fresh, sushi grade fish they we cut ourselves in the store.”
This is the first Poke restaurant in Carson City or the valleys, and already the word has gotten around.
“We had a very limited opening due to the weather,” said Katherine. “But due to word of mouth and social media, we’re growing very quickly as more people find out we’re here.”
PokeDoke is located at Topsy Lane next to In n Out Burger, and they’re currently open seven days a week from 11 am to 8 pm.
