Carson City, Douglas County firefighters face off in friendly competition to raise money for stair climb
The Carson City Fire Department is on scene near the Fox on Carson Street, and traffic is facing a slight delay, but there’s no accident. Instead, the delays are being caused by local residents slowing to give what they can to the firefighters raising money for “Climbing for a Cure,” a rigorous nation-wide stair climb in Seattle, which raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
So far, the Carson City Fire Department has raised $13,000 for the stair climb, but they’re hoping to make it to $25,000 by the end of the day so they can beat East Fork Fire District of Douglas County in a friendly competition, according to Aston Wielke, a volunteer of the fundraiser.
This is the second year Carson City has participated, said Wielke, and the eighth year Douglas has participated.
So far, over the course of eight years, East Fork has raised around $75,000 and this year they’ve already accrued around $23,000.
Participants in Seattle will be climbing with 70 pounds on their backs, on-air, up the second-tallest sky scraper west of the Mississippi, as a reminder that every step forward is one closer to a cure.
Holly Turner is the organizer of this year’s fundraiser at the Fox, which includes raffle prizes, drinks and fun, as well as a demonstration of the firefighters mastering the stair climb.
“My boyfriend climbed last year in Seattle, and I noticed that the local departments across the nation were sending their guys out with full community support,” said Turner. “I wanted to involve our community as well, so people can know what their local firefighters are doing. They’re not only coming to your calls, they’re also raising money for a great cause.”
There are many raffle prize donations as well from local businesses throughout Carson City, Gardnerville, Reno and beyond.
The fundraiser will continue today through sundown. Firefighters are in the road as well with rubber boots collecting dollars and change from drivers-by.
Online donations can be made as well by clicking here.
The Seattle stair climb, in which both East Fork and Carson fire fighters will be participating in first hand, will take place on March 8.
