Quad-County deaths, hospitalizations increase sharply as Omicron continues its spread

Between the first week of January and the first week of February, deaths, hospitalizations, and cases have all increased.

Specifically, the strain on hospitals has increased dramatically. At the time, only 36 Quad-County residents were hospitalized, and only 2 patients were in the ICU with 1 ventilator in use. Now, there are 60 hospitalized patients, 10 of which are in the ICU, and 6 ventilators are in use.

CASES

— Statewide, there is a 1,978 new daily confirmed case average for the prior 14 days.

Within the last 30 days, there have been 3,475 confirmed cases per 100,000. This does not mean that 3,475 cases have been confirmed, but rather, it is a tool used to determine which counties are more at risk by bringing everything level to the 100,000 equivalent.

As of Feb. 4, there have been 631,309 total confirmed cases statewide.

— In Carson City, there is a 65 new daily confirmed case average for the prior 14 days.

Within the last thirty days, there have been 4,816 confirmed cases per 100,000.

As of Feb. 4, there have been 13,327 total confirmed cases in Carson City.

— In Douglas County, there is a 27 new daily confirmed case average for the prior 14 days.

Within the last 30 days, there have been 2,376 confirmed cases per 100,000.

As of Feb. 4, there have been 6,949 total confirmed cases in Douglas County.

— In Lyon County, there is a 52 new daily confirmed case average for the prior 14 days.

Within the last 30 days, there have been 3,025 confirmed cases per 100,000.

As of Feb. 4, there have been 9,321 total confirmed cases in Lyon County.

— In Storey County, there is a 1 new daily confirmed case average for the prior 14 days.

Within the last 30 days, there have been 502 confirmed cases per 100,000.

As of Feb. 4, there have been 284 total confirmed cases in Storey County.

TESTING

— Statewide, every county except Storey County and Eureka County have been reporting over 280 daily tests within a 14 day period with a 7 day lag.

There is a statewide positivity rate of 29.5 percent across a 14 day period with a 7 day lag. What that means is that out of all the tests being taken, 29.5 percent of them are returning positive.

As of Feb. 4, over 6.5 million tests have been taken.

— In Carson City, there is a 779 daily tests per 100,000 average with a 35.3 percent test positivity rate. Over 150,000 tests have been performed total. This is highest test positivity rate ever recorded since the pandemic began.

— In Douglas County, there is a 314 daily tests per 100,000 average with an 41.1 percent test positivity rate. Over 52,000 tests have been performed total. This is highest test positivity rate ever recorded since the pandemic began.

— In Lyon County, there is a 382 daily tests per 100,000 average with a 39.6 percent test positivity rate. Nearly 70,000 tests have been performed total. This is highest test positivity rate ever recorded since the pandemic began.

— In Storey County, there is a 61 daily tests per 100,000 average with a 41.7 percent test positivity rate. 1,262 total tests have been performed. This is highest test positivity rate ever recorded since the pandemic began.

HOSPITALIZATIONS

— Statewide, there are currently 1,339 confirmed COVID hospitalizations and 110 suspected hospitalizations. 293 patients are in the ICU and 159 ventilators are in use.

— In Carson City, there are currently 50 COVID hospitalizations. 8 patients are in the ICU and 6 ventilator is in use.

— In Douglas County, there are currently 8 COVID hospitalizations. 2 patient is in the ICU and 0 ventilators are in use.

— In Lyon County, there are currently 2 COVID hospitalizations. 0 patients are in the ICU and 0 ventilators are in use.

— In Storey County, there are no current COVID hospitalizations.

DEATHS

— Statewide, there have been an average of 5 new daily deaths over the past 14 days, and 7 deaths per 100,000 over the last 30 days.

As of Jan. 8, a total of 8,510 Nevadans have died from COVID-19.

— In Carson City, there have been 7 deaths per 100,000 over the last 30 days. A total of 191 Carson City residents have died from COVID-19 as of Feb. 4.

— In Douglas County, there have been 14 deaths per 100,000 over the last 30 days. A total of 82 Douglas County residents have died from COVID-19 as of Feb. 4.

— In Lyon County, there have been 20 deaths per 100,000 over the last 30 days. A total of 155 Lyon County residents have died from COVID-19 as of Feb. 4.

— In Storey County, there have been 24 deaths per 100,000 over the last 30 days. A total of 9 Storey County residents have died from COVID-19 as of Jan. 8.

VACCINATIONS

— Statewide, over 4.2 million total doses have been administered. Over 2 million vaccinations have been reported as initiated, which is 66.83 percent of the population aged 5 and over.

— In Carson City, 39,586 total vaccinations have been initiated, which is over 72 percent of the population aged 5 and over.

— In Douglas County, nearly 30,000 vaccinations have been initiated, which is 63.10 percent of the population aged 5 and over.

— In Lyon County, nearly 33,000 vaccinations have been reported as initiated, which is 58.72 percent of the population aged 5 and over.

— In Storey County, 1,054 vaccinations have been reported as initiated, which is 25.83 percent of the population aged 5 and over.

DEMOGRAPHICS

As of Feb. 4. more women are receiving the vaccination then men at 52.2 percent versus 47.8 percent, respectively.

Vaccination rates throughout the ages are equally spread between the 20-70+ age groups, from 13 to 15 percent. The smallest group of initiated vaccinations are within the 5-11 age group, which makes up 2.7 percent of total vaccinations.

Those who identify as non-hispanic white lead in vaccinations at 36.3 percent of total vaccinations, which is less than the total population at 49 percent.

Those who identify as hispanic are in second place with 27.4 percent of total vaccinations initiated, fairly equal with the population percent of 30.7 percent.

Those who identify as non-hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native have the smallest group of initiated vaccines, with only 0.6 percent of total vaccinations initiated, slightly less than the 1.1 percent of the population total.

COUNTY TRACKER

Counties are flagged for elevated disease transmission if they meet two of the three criteria of:
An average number of tests per day of less than 100
A case rate of over 200
A case rate of over 50 and a test positivity rate of over 8 percent

As of Feb. 4, all counties except Eureka have at least two flags for case rate and test positivity numbers. Eureka was flagged for only having a 45 average number of tests per day per 100,000.

Story County is the only county currently flagged three times, for the average number of tests per day per 100,000 being only 61, a case rate of 502 per 100,000, and a 41.7 percent test positivity, the second highest in the state following Mineral at 49 percent.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. Saturday, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Communications Division received a 911 call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon and possible abduction at gunpoint occurring in the 8500 block of Santa Fe trail in Stagecoach.

Prison Tours

August tours at the Nevada State Prison in Carson City are filling up for the summer, and tours are opening soon for the fall.

On Friday, June 28, the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team conducted a traffic stop that yielded more than 11 pounds of fentanyl.

Inyo National Forest will be in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions starting Monday, July 1 to protect natural resources and provide for public safety.

Last week at the Board of County Commissioners meeting the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) presented on the speed reduction project in the Mound House area of Lyon County. NDOT will reduce the speed limit to 35 MPH (Please see attached photographs of that presentation)

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports and cases from citizens scammed during fraudulent business transactions.

The suspect in the shooting of two Silver Springs, NV residents on June 26, 2024 has been positively identified as 53 year old Silver Springs resident Stephen Thomas Shytle. At this time, Shytle’s whereabouts are unknown.
