Carson Valley Meats project fails during Board of Supervisors appeal process
The Carson City Board of Supervisors voted to approve the three appeals against the Carson Valley Meats processing facility on Thursday evening, which denies the Carson Valley Meats project.
Three groups of residents appealed a Planning Commission decision to approve the Special Use Permit for the Carson Valley Meats Processing facility.
During the meeting, which began at 5 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, the board heard testimony from each of the three appellants as to why they believed the Planning Commission erred in approving the permit for the facility.
The purpose of the meeting was to determine whether or not the Planning Commission erred in their approval of the permit as determined by city code. No new information was allowed to be heard, but rather the board had to vote based on the same information that was heard at the Planning Commission.
The supervisors all agreed that they were thankful for everyone on both sides of the argument remaining polite.
“I want to recognize and thank the planning commission for their efforts,” said Supervisor Stan Jones. “This is a project that is going to affect all of Carson City. I think it’s a situation that public opinion deserves to be heard and listened to. I will be voting no on this.”
“I feel as though the Planning Commission erred on findings 2 and 7 so I would vote to overturn the decision,” said Supervisor Stacey Giomi.
“While the property is zoned GI there are established neighborhoods,” said Supervisor Lisa Schuette. Supervisor Schuette did not believe enough findings were met.
“Please, work with the city to make this better,” said Supervisor Maurice White. “Did the planning commission err? No. Staff spent 40 minutes to address the concerns they heard in the meetings.”
“Our job is to determine whether or not the Planning Commission erred. The answer is no,” said Mayor Lori Bagwell.
The board voted 3-2 in favor of the appeals. Supervisor White and Mayor Bagwell voted to deny the appeals.
