Wet weekend ahead for Carson City, Northwestern Nevada as Winter storm hits region
Much of Northwestern Nevada, including Carson City, is waking up Saturday morning to a steady rainfall that is forecast to stick around through the morning and afternoon hours, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports.
Rain may actually begin mixing with snow in the afternoon hours around Carson City, the NWS said, but little to no accumulation is expected. A high temperature of 45 degrees is forecast for Saturday.
The wet weather in the valley is part of a winter storm watch at elevations above 6,000 feet Saturday, dropping to 5,000 Sunday and Monday. Significant accumulations of snow are expected in the high sierras as well as the Lake Tahoe Basin. Two feet or more are forecast to fall.
Travel over the mountain passes is not advised with this storm, which is forecast to produce hazardous road conditions in the mountains.
Snow accumulation of about an inch is possible in the valleys overnight Saturday into Sunday morning. The overnight low Saturday into Sunday is expected to lower to 30 degrees and the chance of precipitation is forecast at 50 percent, the NWS said.
The area can expect much of the same weather Sunday with an 80 percent chance of rain mixed with snow in the morning. Sunday can expect a high temperature of about 44 degrees with wind chill affecting the area as southwest winds gust as high as 25 miles per hour (mph).
Overnight temperatures are forecast to drop to 29 degrees Sunday night into Monday morning, turning precipitation into snow that could bring 2-4 inches onto the valley floors, the NWS said.
The Monday morning commute could be significantly impacted. Plan ahead and prepare to leave early and give yourself plenty of time. The going is expected to be slow on area roadways.
Monday should see a high temperature of around 37 degrees with snow accumulations forecast between 1-3 inches. An additional 3-7 inches of new snow accumulation is possible Monday night into Tuesday, which could see 1-3 inches more before 10 a.m., the NWS said.
Tuesday's high temperature is only expected to reach 31 degrees.
Chances of precipitation increase over the next few days before the storm begins to clear out Tuesday night into Wednesday.
