Carson City weekend arrests: Two jailed for suspected second DUIs

A 29-year-old man was arrested Sunday for misdemeanor suspicion of a second DUI and disobedience to a traffic control device, a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report states.

At approximately 2:04 a.m. Sunday a CCSO deputy observed a vehicle traveling northbound on North Curry Street. The officer followed the driver and observed him to fail to stop at a stop sign at North Curry Street and Robinson Street, according to the arrest report.

The officer followed the driver north on North Carson Street and activated his emergency lights in order to initiated a traffic stop. The driver drove into a gas station parking lot in the 700 block of North Carson Street and stopped his vehicle next to the gas pumps.

The officer exited his patrol vehicle and the man exited the driver's seat with both hands in the air. The officer instructed the man to stand next to his vehicle and he complied, the report states.

The officer could smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage as he approached the man. The officer informed him he had pulled him over for failing to stop at the stop sign at North Curry and Robinson. The officer observed the man had difficulty maintaining his balance as he stood next to his vehicle. The officer asked the man if he had been drinking and the man replied yes, the report states. The officer observed the man having red, watery eyes and spoke with slurred speech.

The officer asked the man if he would be willing to conduct standardized field sobriety tests and the man consented. The man performed the field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment. He provided a preliminary breath test of .180 and was arrested. The man was read the request for voluntary evidence and he consented to provide a blood sample. Bail: $2,724.

— A 30-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday for suspicion of misdemeanor second DUI and driving on a suspended license, a Carson City sheriff's report states.

According to the booking report, shortly before 9:30 p.m. a deputy was sent to the area of West Washington in reference to a DUI driver who nearly hit the reporting party (RP).

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the RP who stated he was driving west on East William Street when he saw a vehicle driving south on Nevada Street that failed to stop at a stop sign and nearly hit him. He said the female driver had her head pressed against the driver side window and stated the driver came into their lane and nearly hit them but ended up hitting a snow bank on the side of the road. The RP called 911 and stayed on scene long enough to see the female go into a apartment.

Earlier in the officer's shift, he was sent to the same area to attempt to locate the same vehicle for a possible DUI. The deputy arrived and looked for the vehicle on side streets as well as North Carson Street, all the way to the freeway and was unable to locate.

Upon arrival, the RP pointed out the apartment. The officer asked if he could positively identify the driver, which he said he could. The officer went to the apartment door and knocked. A male opened the door. The officer told him why he was there and asked if there was anyone inside, which he said there was, the report states.

A female later came to the door. The officer asked her to step outside, which she did. The officer asked if he could speak with the male inside, who told the officer he could. The officer walked in and asked how long the female had been there. The male stated about 20 minutes, the report states.

The officer went back outside to speak with the woman, who admitted to drinking and told the officer she did not have a valid license due to a DUI she had received a few years ago.

As the officer was speaking to the woman, he could not smell any odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath but did observe her to have red watery eyes and thick, slurred speech. The officer asked if she would be willing to complete tests. The female declined. The officer asked if she would do a preliminary breath test, which she told the officer she would not.

The woman was arrested for suspicion of DUI. Another deputy arrived to transport the woman. The arresting officer put his hand on the hood of the suspected vehicle the woman was driving and could feel it was warm to the touch.

The witness who remained on scene, completed a statement and identified the woman, the arrest report states.

The officer read the woman the Nevada informed consent and asked her if she would be willing to complete a blood draw. She told the officer she would. She was taken to jail. Officers reviewed the woman's criminal history and located a DUI conviction in May 2019. Bail: $3,137.

Store security advised that during surveillance on the sales floor the man was seen placing multiple merchandise items into a tote and proceeded to self-checkout where it was observed that the man failed to scan a total of 14 pre-selected merchandise items valued at $142.84.

The man passed all points of sale with unpaid merchandise and exited the store. Security advised the man never made an attempt to pay for the items he failed to scan. Walmart security asked the man to return to the store and the man complied. Security said that while in the office the man admitted to the theft.

The arresting officer then made contact with the man who advised he made a bad decision and was sorry for his actions. A records check showed the man was on court supervision through the Department of Alternative Sentencing. DAS advised it wanted the man arrested for an additional violation of conditions. Bail: $3,352.

Cracking a window often does nothing at all as rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car, according to the Humane Society of the U.S.

Today I started pruning out the water sprouts in my four crabapple trees. Some people might call these “suckers,” but suckers grow up from the bottom of the trunk and water sprouts grow in the upper parts of the tree. I have been training three of these trees into a somewhat flattened umbrella shape for almost 20 years. The water sprouts just ruin that effect. So, out they come.
