Sheriff: Human remains discovered north of Carson City in Goni hills area
The Carson City Sheriff's Office is investigating human remains that were discovered by a hiker around noon Tuesday in the hills north of Carson City in the Goni area.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong reports the remains of a human were found approximately 400 yards from the nearest dirt trail road. The location of the discovery was approximately 1,400 yards south of the Storey County, Carson City line, and more than 4,500 yards from the Lyon County line.
Detectives responded to the area and retrieved a human skull, jaw and what appeared to be a single vertebra within a circle area of approximately 40 feet, said Furlong.
The bones were fully decomposed of flesh, suggesting the remains had been in the exposed environment for an extended period of time, said Furlong. Search and rescue crews were prepared for a more extensive search of the area on Wednesday.
All of the remains will be taken to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office for examination and an attempt to identify the person. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at 887-2500.
