Educational banners placed along Carson City school zones as a reminder of zone laws
The Nevada Department of Transportation and Safe Routes to School partners have placed educational banners in select school zones to remind Nevadans to be school zone safe.
Numerous schools in Carson City and Washoe Counties now display educational banners with school zone safety tips, including:
— No u-turns or passing other vehicles in school or school crossing zones, even on multi-lane roadways
— No parking within 20 feet of crosswalks
— Be attentive- eyes on the road and phones down
Fines for speeding in a school zone are double. As an example, a $205 ticket for speeding ten miles over the limit in a non-school area would double to $410 for speeding in a school zone.
In Carson City, the banners can be found at Carson Middle School, Empire Elementary School and Fremont Elementary School.
With more than 177 crashes reported in Nevada school zones last year, drivers are reminded to watch for children walking and bicycling, and to reduce speed in school zones. Children’s awareness and movements can be unpredictable.
Motorists should always be mindful of children as if they were their own family members. Drivers must also stop for school buses stopped to pick up or let students out. Pedestrians and bicyclists should also be attentive, always crossing legally and safely, and looking for vehicles before and while crossing.
The approximately 85 banners are part of Nevada’s Safe Routes to School program. Administered by NDOT in partnership with local school districts, the program provides training, infrastructure and resources for elementary schoolchildren to safely walk and bicycle to school. Walking and bicycling to school can reduce roadway congestion, and help improve air quality and health.
