Lyon County Sheriff's Office warns residents of phone scammer claiming to be a deputy
YERINGTON — The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents of an attempted phone scam that happened Tuesday.
In one instance, the suspect caller stated he was “Deputy Matt Reynolds” with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. He told the potential victim they had warrants for their arrest and then requested the victim give him money to expunge the warrants.
In two other instances the caller also claimed to be a deputy from the LCSO and used an active deputy’s name. In these two cases the same tactic was employed: Advising the potential victims they had warrants and that they needed to get money to personally pay the deputy to make the warrants go away.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that warrants are handled through their respective courts of jurisdiction. The fines associated with warrants are never handled personally by a deputy and never involve paying a deputy or any other person claiming to be a member of a law enforcement agency or court.
If you’ve fallen victim to this scam, call the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office at (775) 577-5023 to report it. The sheriff’s office urges that anyone who receives a similar phone call to not follow the caller’s instructions. They should hang up and call the Lyon County sheriff’s office at (775) 577-5023 to report incident.
