Carson City’s Carson Plaza one of the first senior communities picked to receive COVID-19 vaccine
Carson City’s Carson Plaza has been selected as one of the first senior living communities in Northern Nevada to receive the COVID-19 vaccine facility-wide, which will undoubtedly bring a sense of security to its residents and caregivers.
According to Maria Tagliarino of Carson Plaza, located at 2120 E Long St., at least 90 percent of all residents, staff and caregivers are slated to receive the vaccine. The type of vaccine they will be receiving, said Tagliarino, is the Pfizer-BionTech COVID-19 vaccine.
There are currently 80 people who reside full time at this senior-living facility, and Carson Plaza has been taking safety measures extremely seriously to make sure that the residents are not exposed.
“We have been very adamant about protecting the residents and our staff by taking temperatures and filling out a questionnaire before entering the community,” said Tagliarino. “That includes all staff, caregivers and vendors.”
Access to potential outside exposures have been limited as well. No visitors have been allowed to come for meals, and even the mailman is kept downstairs, as opposed to delivering mail to each apartment.
Additionally, only 20 residents are allowed in the dining room at one time, and no housekeepers or staff members are allowed inside an apartment without both the resident and staff member wearing masks. In communal areas, staff and residents must keep six feet apart and wear masks at all times.
According to Tagliarino, receiving the vaccine will directly affect the day-to-day life of the residents.
“I believe it will provide a huge source of comfort to them feeling safer in their community,” said Tagliarino. “Even with the social distancing, many of them are still nervous about leaving their apartments, and the ones who really want to be involved in activities and still feel independent will feel a lot better about everything.”
Tagliarino said the residents are excited about being one of the first communities in Northern Nevada, and that their families are comforted knowing that their parents and loved ones will be safe at Carson Plaza, as far as COVID-19 is concerned.
The residents and staff members will be receiving their vaccines on Jan. 19. A booster shot will be given to residents and staff 21-days after their first dosage.
