Carson City arrests: Man admits taking Walmart vest, ID card with intention to steal from store
A 29-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of burglary after allegedly using a Walmart vest and identification card he took from the store with the intention to steal merchandise, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
Colbie Cleveland, listed as Fernley resident, was taken into custody at 10:45 a.m. He also was booked for felony parole and probation violation and suspicion of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to the booking report a deputy was dispatched to Walmart on Market Street for a report of an intoxicated man. Dispatch advised a male employee was intoxicated and wandering around the store and refusing to leave. The male subject was described as wearing a Walmart vest over a blue hoodie and wearing jeans.
Walmart staff waved down a deputy in the parking lot and pointed to the man who had entered a parked vehicle. The deputy activated his emergency lights and exited his patrol vehicle and made contact with the man, who was seated in the driver seat with the vehicle running, the report states.
The man identified himself verbally as Colbie Cleveland. He was wearing a marked Walmart employee vest with an an employee identification card that wasn't his name. The officer noted Cleveland's speech was slow and slurred and he appeared lethargic. He denied being under the influence of alcohol, the report states.
The officer asked the suspect what was going on. Cleveland admitted he was trying to steal items from Walmart. He stated he found the employee vest and identification card inside the store. When speaking to the suspect, the deputy observed, in plain view, a tooter straw near the gear shifter. (Tooter straws are used to inhale smoke from narcotics. Tin foil is commonly used as a barrier between the substance and element used to heat the substance.)
The deputy asked the man to exit the vehicle, which he complied and consented to a search. The deputy continued to speak with the man, who stated he came from Fernley to the Walmart in Carson City for the purposes of stealing. A records check revealed he is on the case load of the Nevada Department of Parole and Probation with multiple conditions. Parole and probation requested he be placed under arrest, the report states.
The deputy used his K9 Ben to do a free air sniff of the exterior of the vehicle. The dog alerted positive. The deputy located another tooter straw between the driver seat and door inside the center console and the one near the gear shifter. Also located was tin foil in the back seat.
Due to Cleveland allegedly entering a business establishment, taking an employee vest and identification and falsifying himself as an employee for the purpose of committing larceny, he was placed under arrest for burglary, drug paraphernalia and the parole and probation hold. No bail hold for the parole and probation violation.
