First Carson City Cultural Commission meeting of new year to be held Jan. 14
The first Carson City Cultural Commission meeting of the new year will take place on Monday, Jan 14 in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The Carson City Community Center is located at 851 E. William Street.
The major item on the first meeting of the Carson City Cultural Commission’s agenda is the discussion of distribution of a new Cultural Event Grant the Commission would distribute with pre-existing, budgeted funds from the Arts and Culture 1 percent Transient Occupancy Tax.
As per the Carson City Arts & Culture Master Plan, the Cultural Commission’s goals shall ”support multicultural diversity of art, heritage and cultural traditions, which include African- American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian and other ethnic and folk expressions of culture alongside traditional Eurocentric art forms.”
A new grant for the Carson City Cultural Commission to directly score and distribute is being submitted for review and discussion before approval. Previously, all grant requests for such cultural events were distributed by the Arts & Culture Coordinator. If approved, funding requests would go before the Carson City Cultural Commission at regularly scheduled meetings for presentation, scoring, and distribution, according to Carson City's Arts and Culture Director Mark Salinas.
The total budgeted amount for this grant in the fiscal 2019/2020 year would not exceed $8,000.
At the meeting as well, a chair and vice-chair will be elected for the Carson City Cultural Commission’s 2019 calendar year.
The Carson City Cultural Commission, established in 2008 by Carson City Municipal Code Chapter 2.41, serves as the primary advisory body to the Carson City Board of Supervisors for matters relating to arts and culture for benefit of all residents and visitors.
Commissioner Roster as of January 1, 2019: Terri McBride (Chair), Barbara D’Anneo (Vice Chair), Karen Abowd, Elinor Bugli, Lupe Ramirez, Chris Leyva, Mylo McCormick.
