Carson City arrests: Man flees vehicle burglary, leaves his cell phone and backpack behind
A 27-year-old man was arrested Sunday for suspicion of felony burglary of a motor vehicle, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
Marcus Reuben Estrada was taken into custody in the area of Saliman and East Long Street at 5:15 p.m.
According to the arrest report, at around 4:55 p.m. deputies responded to a vehicle burglary. The reporting party stated someone broke into his vehicle and told dispatch that when he confronted the suspect, the man fled on foot. The suspect left behind his backpack and cell phone at the scene.
A few minutes later a deputy stopped a male subject in the area, observed the man who fit the description and detained him. The victim was able to identify the man who burglarized his vehicle, the report states. The victim told the officer he was missing a vape pen. The vape pen was found on the suspect, according to the report.
Another deputy who was standing with the victim who advised there was a cell phone and backpack left at the scene. The cell phone was turned on with a social media profile opened. The profile belonged to the suspect, the report states.
The man was placed into custody for suspicion of vehicle burglary and taken to jail.
A deputy returned to the victim's vehicle and observed the rear passenger window was busted out with what appeared to be either a rock or a floor jack, the report states. There was pry marks on the window sill. The shoe imprint in the snow was a "waffle print" to Vans shoes. The suspect was also wearing Vans shoes. Bail: $25,000.
In other arrests:
— A 39-year-old Carson City man, Randy Alan Kern, was arrested Dec. 30 for suspicion of felony burglary, possession of stolen property and misdemeanor obtaining money under false pretense, according to a sheriff's office booking report.
During the investigation, a second man was arrested, Joshua Hayes, 33, of Carson City, for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to the booking report, a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy was assigned to the Special Enforcement Team Unit. The deputy was briefed concerning a residential burglary that happened in Storey County on Dec. 21 in which a safe containing $2,000 in jewelry and $5,000 in U.S. currency was taken from a residence. The jewelry was described as a set of gold and diamond stud earrings and a gold and diamond pennant necklace.
The deputy was briefed the three individuals had been at a residence prior to the burglary, painting the exterior and working on the HVAC system. The three individuals were Randy Kern, Joshua Hayes and an unnamed person in the report.
The Carson City SET deputy was briefed by the Storey County deputies that Hayes lived in the 1500 block of Como Street. Storey County deputies had checked for the items online and located 2 pawn transactions that occurred in Carson City. Storey County deputies conducted a followup with the victims and showed them the photos of the pawned items. The victims were able to identify the items as property taken from their residence.
A search warrant was executed. Deputies found evidence during the investigation and arrested Kern for suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property and obtaining money under false pretense. Hayes was arrested for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia found during the warrant search. Bail for Kern: $17,500. Bail for Hayes, $3,637.
— An 18-year-old man was arrested early Jan. 1 for suspicion of assault on a police officer and four misdemeanor offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
Angel Sanchez Martinez was arrested at 12:41 a.m. and was also booked for the following alleged misdemeanor offenses: obstruction, DUI, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and driving without a valid driver's license.
According to the booking report, a deputy observed a white truck at rest in a snow berm on Fairview Drive. The officer approached the vehicle and observed a male subject sitting in the driver's seat with no other passengers in the vehicle. The man had a small laceration on his nose. The officer asked if he needed medical attention. The man denied, the arrest report states.
The officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man's person. The driver was unable to provide a license, registration or proof of insurance. He stated he did not have a license and that the vehicle belonged this his grandfather, the report states.
The man identified himself with first name and refused to provide his full name, date of birth or other identification. The officer initiated field sobriety tests where the man showed signs of impairment. He provided a preliminary breath test of .286 and was arrested. Inside the patrol vehicle, he was read a request for voluntary evidence, where the man stated he would provide a blood sample.
During an inventory of the vehicle prior to it being towed a deputy located a handgun on the floorboard between the front driver and passenger seat. Officers booked the firearm and loaded magazine into evidence, the report states.
The man was transported to Carson City Jail. He sat on a bench and then unexpectedly stood up and charged a deputy, running directly at him. Another officer ran after the man. The man was pushed against the wall then to the ground to gain and maintain control over him, the report states. Video footage was booked into evidence.
Jail staff requested the man be taken to Carson Tahoe Hospital for medical clearance. The man became physically resistant toward officer commands, repeatedly refusing to sit down for treatment. Hospital security assisted in restraining the man, while the deputy called for a second patrol unit to respond, the report states. Once he was medically cleared he was taken to jail and was physically resistant and uncooperative with jail deputies. Total bail amount listed: $8,603.
— 30-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Monday for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant. Bail: $300.
