Christmas tree curbside recycling, drop off locations around Carson City
In cooperation with Capital Sanitation and Waste Management, Christmas trees can be placed curbside in Carson City on regular trash collection days or taken to a drop off location. Trees will be chipped in the springtime and used as mulch.
The program continues to be a success, judging by the amount of trees collected over the years. Last year, the recycling effort re-directed 35 tons of wood waste from the landfill, according to Carson City Environmental Control Authority.
Since 2001, more than 350,000 trees have been recycled throughout Nevada thanks to the help of several Christmas tree recycling programs, thousands of volunteers and many community sponsors, according to Nevada Recycles.
These programs were established to provide Nevada communities with an easy alternative to landfilling and to prevent illegal dumping of Christmas trees in public open spaces. When chipped into mulch, cut trees become valuable organic material used in landscaping projects that help conserve soil moisture, keep plants healthy and control weeds.
Carson City:
The following is the recycle schedule:
Curbside:
Monday, Jan. 1 to Friday, Jan. 5 is curbside collection. Trees will be picked up on your regular trash day. If trees are longer than 6 feet, please cut them into sections no longer than 6 feet.
Also, folks are urged to remove all decorations, lights, tinsel and bases from the trees before recycling.
Drop-off Bins:
Beginning Monday, Jan. 1 there will be Christmas tree drop-off bins at the following Carson City locations:
— Big Lots parking lot at Clearview and South Carson Street.
— Public Works Yard at Airport and East Fifth Street.
— Bully’s Parking lot, 3530 North Carson Street.
— Waste Management parking lot, 5560 Sheep Drive.
— Carson City Landfill (Green Waste Pile).
After Jan. 5, people are urged to take their Christmas trees to the Carson City Landfill for recycling.
Trees left curbside after Jan. 5 will be disposed of as garbage and will need to be cut into 3-foot sections so they will fit into Waste Management trucks.
