Nevada Humanities exhibition showcases stories about life on the border featuring paintings, poems by Shaun T. Griffin
As part of the ongoing Nevada Humanities Exhibition Series, a new exhibition, Border Stories: Paintings and Poems by Shaun T. Griffin, will open online on December 2, 2021, at nevadahumanities.org and will be on display as a virtual exhibition indefinitely.
The exhibition will be open to the public for viewing by appointment only at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery, 1017 South 1st Street, #190, Las Vegas, Nevada; in-person viewing of this exhibit will close on January 21, 2022. An in-person opening reception will take place at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery in Las Vegas on Thursday, December 2, 2021, from 5 to 8 pm. An exhibition discussion and a poetry reading, featuring Shaun T. Griffin, will be held at 6 pm and simultaneously broadcast on Facebook Live. Space is limited and masks will be required regardless of vaccination status.
Border Stories features the poetry and watercolor paintings of Virginia City-based Shaun T. Griffin, who, through his poetry and art, explores and illuminates stories from the United States-Mexico borderlands. Griffin is a poet, a writer, and a teacher. He is the co-founder of Community Chest, a non-profit agency in Storey County, Nevada, that has served children and families in northwestern Nevada since 1991. Shaun has taught in a variety of settings, including a poetry workshop at Northern Nevada Correctional Center, for over two decades. His most recent book of poems, The Monastery of Stars, was published by Kelsay Books in 2020. Griffin’s creative work draws from his lifetime of experiences in service to the greater community. Griffin received the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts in 1995 and was inducted into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame in 2014.
“Border Stories, as envisioned through the poetry and paintings of Shaun Griffin, brings us solidly into the middle of an important conversation about the dynamism and tension of life on the border between the U.S. and Mexico,” says Christina Barr, Nevada Humanities Executive Director. “Shaun’s work transports us to the border where we explore the intimacy of the stories told by the people who live there.”
Border Stories will be on display at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery until January 21, 2022, and may be viewed by appointment only, Tuesdays through Thursdays from 1 to 4 pm and until 9 pm the first Friday of the month for First Friday events. Masks are required regardless of vaccination status and capacity is limited.
