Expert on neo-fascism to speak at Monday's Democratic luncheon
Leonard Weinberg, Emeritus Professor of Political Science at the University of Nevada-Reno will speak via Zoom at Monday's Democratic luncheon. Prof. Weinberg has served as a senior fellow at the National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism in Oklahoma City and at the National Security Studies Center at the University of Haifa in Israel. His specialist research areas include right wing violence, neo-fascism and conspiracy theories.
Leonard Weinberg began his academic journey in 1961 with a BA from Syracuse University, an MA from the University of Chicago in 1962, studies at the University of Florence in 1965-66, and a PhD from Syracuse University in 1967. He also studied at Yad Vashem and Hebrew University, as well as at the Institute on Teaching the Holocaust in Jerusalem.
Prof. Weinberg is a Senior Fellow at the National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism in Oklahoma City and at the National Security Studies Center at the University of Haifa, Israel. He began his academic career as Instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1966–67. At the UNR he was appointed Assistant Professor in 1967, Associate Professor in 1971, Full Professor in 1978 and Foundation Professor in 1996.
Over the course of his career Weinberg has been a Fulbright Senior Research Fellow for Italy, a Visiting Scholar at UCLA, a Guest Professor at the University of Florence, and the recipient of an H.F. Guggenheim Foundation grant for the study of political violence. He has also served as a consultant to the United Nations Office for the Prevention of Terrorism (Agency for Crime Control and Drug Prevention).
In 2005 he participated in the planning for the Madrid Summit Conference on Democracy, Terrorism and Security. He is a member of the International Political Science Association (and its Work Group on Fascism), the American Political Science Association, the International Sociological Association, the International Society of Political Psychology, the Conference Group on Italian Politics of American Political Science Association, the Committee on Political Sociology and the Society for Comparative Research. Leonard Weinberg is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Democracy and Security.
Honors and awards include the Borsa di Studio from the Italian Government 1965–66, University of Nevada Foundation Award for Study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem 1982, Fulbright Senior Research Fellow for Italy, 1984, University of Nevada International Activities Grant 1995–96, Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Research Grant 1995–96, co-recipient of the Thornton Peace Prize for his work in promoting Christian-Jewish reconciliation 1999

(co-author) 2006, Democratic Responses to Terrorism (editor) 2007, The End of Terrorism 2011 and Democracy and Terrorism 2013.
Over the course of his career Prof. Weinberg has been a Fulbright senior research fellow for Italy, a visiting scholar at UCLA, a guest professor at the University of Florence, a visiting professor at King’s College, University of London, the University of Haifa, and the recipient of an H. F. Guggenheim Foundation grant for the study of political violence. Articles authored by Leonard Weinberg have appeared in such journals as The British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Politics, and Party Politics.
