Grammy Nominee Tierney Sutton to headline Reno Jazz Orchestra's hoilday shows
With the holiday season now in full swing, it’s only appropriate that the Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) brings Jazz for the Holidays to Northern Nevada for all to enjoy on December 19th and 20 at Nightingale Hall - University of Nevada. Sharing the stage with the 17 piece big band this year is Tierney Sutton, 2015 GRAMMY Nominee for “Best Jazz Vocal Album”.
“We always look forward to this time of the year,” said Chuck Reider, music director for the Reno Jazz Orchestra. “This year we showcase the holiday spirit through jazz in music and song that will entertain fans of all music genres and ages.”
Each event kicks-off with a holiday performance from the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra. “The students have a tendency to steal the show,” boasted conductor Vern Scarbrough who leads this ‘sister organization’ of the Reno Jazz Orchestra.
Reserved seating and tickets are now on sale through the non-profit organization’s website at www.renojazzorchestra.org . Student tickets are $10; adult ticket prices start at $35.
Every year the RJO complements their music with a special guest star and this year is no exception. Seven-time GRAMMY nominee Tierney Sutton will share her own talents throughout the evening.
Notably quoted by the NEW YORK TIMES as “… a serious jazz artist who takes the whole enterprise to another level,” Sutton continues to add to her impressive list of accomplishments.
Sutton has received six consecutive nominations for “Best Jazz Vocal Album”- a nomination for every project she has released for the last decade. In 2013 she released “After Blue”, a jazz-inspired re-imagining of the legacy of Joni Mitchell. The album received wide acclaim and was Sutton’s breakout as a leader without her longtime Band and features Al Jarreau, Hubert Laws, Peter Erskine, Larry Goldings, Mark Summer, Kevin Axt, Serge Merlaud and The Turtle Island String Quartet. Sutton’s “After Blue: The Joni Mitchell Project” continues to tour the world.
The Reno Jazz Orchestra started in 1977. The EL Cord Foundation, National Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, Reno Art Works, Reno Gazette Journal, Ashley Quinn, KUNR Saturday Night Jazz, Carol Franc Buck Foundation, the Eldorado Hotel and Casino and the RJO Band of 100 support this annual event.
