A story of compassion and giving from a Carson City community quilt and sewing group
“Sewing a quilt is an act imbued with meaning, and making a quilt to give as a gift goes beyond an offering of warmth to one of enduring connection.” — Thomas Knauer
As we enter into this holiday season, Visiting Angels of Carson City would like to share a story of giving in our community that warmed our hearts. Something magical happened to us. An organization known as Ditch Stitcher Quilt and Sewing Group selected our company to receive their donated handmade quilts.
We are a business that provides in-home care to seniors in our community so we knew how special this act would be to our clients. Months passed and we imagined the process and labor going into a single quilt: a pattern emerging from smaller fabrics sewn together stitch by stitch, a plethora of colors and styles expressed by the quilt makers. In July, 14 different quilts arrived, each crafted by a different member of the group.
As you can see from the photos, the group is extraordinarily talented and the quilts are absolutely gorgeous and vibrant. They requested that all quilts be distributed in honor of one of their members who has been having health challenges, but who also contributed one of the quilts.
We took care to individually match each quilt with a Visiting Angels client and distributed them over the last several months. With each delivery a celebration was felt as a connection was made with this community through this act of giving and receiving.
We are so grateful to have been selected by Ditch Stitcher Quilt and Sewing Group, and to have the opportunity to share their special work with some of our clients. We extend a very warm thank you to the group, which we know does not compare to the compassion and generosity that each of them have in their hearts.
