Dayton and Silver Springs food pantries add new hours
Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties is now offering new hours at two of their food pantries for those who cannot visit during their regular hours.
Dayton Food Pantry, located at 209 Dayton Valley Road, will continue is normal hours of Tuesday through Thursday 10am-4pm. However, the pantry is now also staying open until 6pm on Tuesdays.
Food Pantry Coordinator Traci Rothman explained that “this will give extra hours for our neighbors to come to us without feeling rushed.” In addition, the Dayton Pantry will also be open the second Saturday of each month from 9am-1pm starting Nov. 11.
HCC is also testing a program called Golden Groceries for adults age 60+. In Nevada, the rate of Senior Hunger is one of the highest in the nation. In our state, 10.7 percent of seniors face hunger each day and many do so without letting anyone know. With these facts in mind, the Golden Groceries program allows seniors the opportunity to come into a food pantry at designated times.
HCC's Dayton Food Pantry has reserved Tuesday mornings as senior shopping days. The Pantry now opens at 7am until 10amon Tuesdays to allow older adults time to read nutrition labels, ask questions, and get information regarding additional resources. All HCC pantries include onsite, trained and trusted Community Health Workers who can offer referrals and facilitate access to health and social services.
The Silver Stage Food Pantry, located at 1290 Lahontan Street in Silver Springs, has selected Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8am-10am as their Golden Groceries senior shopping hours. They will continue to offer their regular distribution hours for all pantry guests Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am-4pm.
HCC's long-term goal is to implement similar changes in its Yerington food pantry, after testing the new hours at its Dayton and Silver Springs locations.
Rothman said, “I am super excited to be able to reach more families and hope these changes will help us serve more of the community that we know needs the extra little bit of help and just can’t get to the pantry during our other hours.”
