Carson City proclaims Oct. 2 'World Day for Farmed Animals'
Mayor Lori Bagwell has proclaimed October 2, 2021 World Day for Farmed Animals in Carson City. This proclamation calls on residents to explore a wholesome, nonviolent diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
World Day for Farmed Animals (WDFA) was established in 1983 to open dialogue about removing animals from U.S. dinner tables and has since expanded into an international program recognized around the world.
Carson City is the capital of the state of Nevada and is the regional retail and commercial center for northwestern Nevada, which is devoted to irrigated farming, livestock raising, and mining of silver and other minerals.
“We would like to thank Mayor Bagwell for this proclamation,” said Eric C Lindstrom, Executive Director of Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM). “Her commitment to the health and well-being of her residents is evidenced in her decision and we are grateful.”
Through WDFA, educational events, demonstrations and protests have been held throughout the U.S. as well as other countries. Proclamations from all U.S. Governors and Mayors have been requested and Carson City, Nevada is the first to proclaim October 2 ‘World Day for Farmed Animals Day.” Additionally, virtual events have been planned and a full listing can be found on the WDFA website.
This year’s observance is particularly meaningful since, in spite of the 38th observance of WDFA, nearly all farm animals are still raised in “factory farms,” where they are caged, crowded, mutilated, manhandled, drugged, and denied their natural needs. In spite of this fact, surveys indicate that 93% of consumers disapprove of mistreatment of farmed animals, and several states have enacted legislation protecting sick and injured animals.
The excessive dependence on antibiotics used to promote rapid growth of animals in factory farms threaten the ability of consumers to avoid infectious and sometimes fatal diseases, while meat processors are exposing workers and their local communities to COVID-19.
Worldwide, waste from factory farms continues to foul rivers and groundwater aquifers, yet 80% of all our water is still used for factory farming, in spite of widespread shortages.
The United Nations has declared animal farming as a major contributor to global warming, and people everywhere are concerned by these developments. WDFA asks citizens to call public attention to these pressing issues on or about October 2nd, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the world’s foremost advocate of sustainable farming, and to explore a wholesome, nonviolent diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
WDFA 2021 has partnered with The Animal Activism Mentorship Program, The Animal Law Firm, Animal Justice, Casa Vegana, Jewish Veg, SWITCH4GOOD, Their Turn (the social justice movement of our time), and World Day for Farmed Animals Asia, Egg-Truth, Dairy-Truth, among others.
WDFA is a program of Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM), a Washington DC-based national nonprofit organization advocating for animal rights and veganism since 1976. For many years, FARM was the only national animal rights organization fighting for farmed animals. For more information, visit farmusa.org.
