Letter: Jeers to the Carson Ranger District, Toiyabe National Forest
Being a former USFS employee of the Carson Ranger District and the timber crew supervisor in the 1980s, im appalled at the lack of timber management going on in this district.
Not even salvage cutting is being done in the huge fire of two years ago that burned a good part of Alpine county and Markleeville areas. All that timber has been left to rot on the stem and will soon be falling creating fuels for the next burn down the road.
There is a huge mill in the works at the outskirts of Carson City and its loaded with timber from the Caldor fire. It seems The Eldorado National forest is still on the ball. But the Toiyabe- which was responsible for the huge Alpine county burn has not done a thing to reclaim or use the millions of board feet of valuable lumber left to rot.
And its completely possible to log such burns- as we did it in 1988 after the Acorn fire and helicopter logged that burn and was a viable money maker for the district. In fact t was the first helicopter SALVAGE SALE ever done in the region. But i guess those lessons learned have gone the way of the dodo bird when it comes to todays management of my home district. Im almost embarrassed to say i used to be part of it.
