Gazette Journal politics reporter to be featured at Monday's Democratic luncheon
The featured speaker at Carson City's June 21st Democratic luncheon will be James DeHaven, state politics reporter for the Reno Gazette Journal and the USA Today Network.
A Dayton native and 2012 UNR graduate, DeHaven was the 2015 winner of the James Foley Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism and is a two-time recipient of investigative reporting awards from the Nevada Press Association.
While at UNR, James worked as a reporter and assistant sports editor for the Nevada Sagebrush, where he covered UNR athletics, primarily football, women’s soccer, cross-country and baseball. He wrote game summaries and filed feature stories and individual player profiles. He also interned at Reno Public Radio, where he contributed daily reporting on a range of local topics on KUNR while learning voice automation and broadcast programming basics, as well as advanced audio editing techniques. He also spent time as a reporter for the Reno News and Review, where he covered regional news and politics, including county and city elections.
After graduation, DeHaven was hired as a graphic reporter for the Calaveras Enterprise in San Andreas, California. There he reported on government and politics, including county elections and budget deliberations. Starting in 2013 he became a graphic reporter at the Las Vegas Review-Journal, where he worked for almost three years covering the city of Las Vegas. In 2016 he moved on to the Helena Independent Record as a Montana capitol reporter. His next move was to Southern California, where he worked as a graphic reporter on the San Diego Union Tribune's watchdog team. In November, 2017 he arrived back in Northern Nevada as state politcs reporter for the Reno Gazette Journal.
Jame's presentation at Monday's luncheon will constitute a broad review of the bills passed by the legislature's recently concluded 81st session, and subsequently signed or vetoed by the governor.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, June 21st, and will be held both in person at Carson City's Democratic headquarters, 502 E John St. and online via Zoom teleconference.
