Family Friendly Events in Silver City This Summer

Silver City, Nevada- Silver City's annual schedule of summer STEAM activities (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) got its start in 2004.

Summer events for children are open to children and their parents from any town and are not limited to Silver City denizens.

The children's portion of the summer STEAM program is organized by Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC). Guest teachers are experts in their fields who come from many different organizations such as University Nevada Cooperative Extension, Society of Women Engineers, United Way, etc.

In addition, local groups, such as the Silver City Arts group, Evangeline Presents, the Silver City Historic Preservation Society, and others also host summer programming in Silver City.

Below is a list of free events. Children must be accompanied by their parents. Each activity is designed for a different age group.

Tuesday June 22 Music in the Park (10am-noon): Bring your own lawn chair and enjoy a family-friendly acoustic music concert with Mylo McCormick, who was recognized for "Best Entertainment in Rural Nevada" by Nevada Magazine in their 2019 "Best of Nevada" survey. Free. HCC staff will be handing out the summer STEAM schedule and HCC’s Dandelion publication, a monthly newsletter listing resources in the Lyon region. Tuesday June 29 Mixed Media Art Class with artist Angelia Leal. Limited to ten students ages 10 through adult. RSVP to quest@theodata.com to hold your spot for this class (location and time will be sent to you after you RSVP). Attendees are asked to bring a surface for their art that is not canvas (such as metal, wood, plastic, mylar, paper). Leal will provide materials such as paint, pencil, eggs, and ink to create your own mixed media artwork. Free. Sponsored by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City in partnership with HCC.

Tuesday July 6 Tour of Permaculture Projects in Silver City with Permaculture Designer Canyon Cassidy. This tour is a special event for Silver City locals. Space is limited. Locals can email quest@theodata.com for location and time. Adults from other towns can request to be placed on a waiting list for other tours that may be offered to the public later in the year. Free. Sponsored by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City.

Tuesday July 13 School Readiness Fun (10am-noon): United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra will bring their annual school readiness activity fair for preschoolers and their parents (hands on art and science fun, games and story time, plus healthy snacks and free children’s books to take home). Sponsored by HCC in partnership with United Way. Free. Silver City Schoolhouse community center, 395 High Street, Silver City, Nevada 89428.

Tuesday July 20 Storytime (10am-noon): Dayton author Lisa Selmi will read her new children's book, Oscar’s Big Adventure. Sponsored by HCC in partnership with the Silver City Volunteer Library. Lisa will bring copies of her new book to sign for those who would like to buy one to take one home. The library is located within the Silver City Schoolhouse community center at 395 High Street, Silver City, Nevada 89428.

Tuesday August 3 Engineering Mini-camp: Annual robotics/ engineering mini-camp for girls and boys ages 8-14 (with their parents) with Society of Women Engineers and Nevada First leading the camp. Limit of 24 students. RSVP to quest@theodata.com for time and location. Sponsored in partnership with HCC. Free. Kids will compete in an exciting SumoBot competition after they write a program to make their robots go forward and back and drive in a square. Then they'll build a robot "arm" and form teams to compete with their SumoBots!

Lanes reduced on U.S. 50 in west Dayton this Friday morning through Monday morning as we replace concrete barrier.

The Nevada State Museum and University of Nevada, Reno conducted archaeological excavations at Fort Churchill State Park in the mid-1970s. Museum staff and research associates are re-examining these collections reflecting U.S. Army and other military units’ occupation of the fort between 1860 and 1869.
