Douglas Youth Football League 2019 registration this Saturday
GARDNERVILLE — The Carson Valley Patriots have now expanded into the Douglas Youth Football League and have announced the dates for their 2019 season in-person registration events. The opening event will be held Saturday, March 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Pizza Factory in Minden.
“We are very excited about our upcoming 2019 season,” said Shane Thomas, Area Coordinator for DYFL. “As a league we strive to build a program that incorporates some of the life skills and values necessary in becoming productive members of any society, by investing into the youth of tomorrow.
"We focus on character building and productive decision making in a team atmosphere through positive encouragement. Emphasizing the importance and value of every athlete’s individuality while teaching inclusion for all. Our desire is for every athlete to realize their full potential while building self-esteem, confidence, leadership and positive lifelong friendships and memories,” said Thomas.
Northern Nevada’s Only Youth Tackle Football League with Weight Regulations
DYFL teams compete in the Sierra Youth Football League (SYFL), Northern Nevada’s largest youth football & cheerleading organization. While other youth tackle football leagues in the region have recently eliminated any weight regulations, the SYFL has maintained a consistent and inclusive weight regulation system that prioritizes player safety. The SYFL weight regulation system allows all players to play football but ensures that players that are very large for their age play positions that greatly reduce the full speed contact that can be a major cause of injury.
“Parents considering tackle football rightly have player safety at the top of their list,” said Thomas. “With safety being our top priority, our weight regulations are an integral component in keeping players safe and we are proud to participate in a league that shares our commitment to safety. We further emphasize safety by paying for our coaches to go to football/cheer clinics, purchasing new top of the line equipment and requiring coaches complete 9 different courses, including USA Football Heads Up Tackling certifications.”
Integration with High School Football Programs
Most SYFL teams in the region work closely with their area high school to prepare their players for the high school football program and Douglas YFL is no different. Starting this season, DYFL will work closely with the Douglas High School football staff to implement the age-appropriate DHS schemes, plays, drills, and terminology used in the high school program.
“We think by working closely with DHS this will benefit everyone involved” said Thomas. “Our football and cheer coaches have embraced running our local high schools’ playbook and cheers at every age group from 5-14 years old. Giving our athletes a head-start in learning the specific skills and foundational concepts that will catapult them ahead of their competitors once in high school.”
