Students from Carson City, surrounding counties participate in 2024 Americanism essay competition
Local area schools from Gardnerville, Yerington, Carson City and Virginia City were given the opportunity to have their 7-12th Grade Students participate in an Essay Contest sponsored by the Sierra, Tahoe Fleet Reserve Association.
Approximately 89 students submitted essays that were themed “What Does Memorial Day Mean To Me.” The essays were then judged by a panel of FRA Branch and Auxiliary members for each grade level and winners were determined by a proven scoring system that considers the depth of the theme content, individuality, grammatic structure, legibility and overall presentation.
A congratulatory luncheon was held for the winners of the Essay Contest in Carson City on Feb. 17. First place winners received $100 each, second place received $75 and third place winners were awarded $50 each.
“It is encouraging to know that there are so many youth in our community that are dedicated to a better future for America,” stated Jim Jackson, President of the Sierra, Tahoe Branch.
“We were excited to have Virginia City Schools participate this year are hopeful to add Dayton Valley Schools next year.”
