Winter Wine and All That Jazz in photos

At least 350 attended Saturday night's Winter Wine and All That Jazz at the Carson Nugget Ballroom in Carson City. The wine tasting and jazz event was a fundraiser for the Brewery Arts Center. Attendees sipped, sampled and tasted more than 40 wines from around the region, listened to great jazz and even danced into the evening.

Zephyrus Brass Quintet to play Saturday at Carson Mall

Zephyrus Brass Quintet, an affiliate of the Carson City Symphony, will play for the first annual Blood Drive for Life on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Carson Mall, 1227 S. Carson Street. Admission is free.

The blood drive, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., is sponsored by Northern Nevada Youth Football League and United Blood Services. Two semi-pro teams, the Reno Reapers women's team and the Nevada Dream team, will be at the event.

Outdoors with Don Q: Two interesting days at a sport show

Elaine and I spent last Friday and Saturday manning an exhibit at the ninth annual Grand Slam Club OVIS Hunter and Outfitter Convention held at the Grand Sierra Hotel and Casino Hotel in Reno.

We were there to help Paul Dankowski, Game Warden and Operation Game Thief (OGT) Coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).

The two of us serve as State Directors on the OGT Citizen's Board, and had volunteered to man the OGT exhibit trailer for those two days.

14th Annual Feast of Chocolate

14th Annual Carson City Feast of Chocolate will be Saturday Feb. 9, 12 – 3 p.m. This all-you-can-eat full buffet of chocolate treats is presented by the American Association of University Women, Capital Branch. Proceeds of the event benefit local scholarships and the AAUW Educational Opportunities Fund.

This year’s FOC will be held at the Plaza Hotel and Conference Center, 801 S. Carson St, Carson City. Tickets are $13 and $8 at the door, or purchase early and pay just $10 for adults and $5 for children. Call (775) 267-4515 for tickets or information.

Winter Wine and All that Jazz for Brewery Arts Center Jan. 19

An evening of wine tasting and dancing will be featured at the Winter Wine & All the Jazz, set for Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, 7 to 10 p.m. at the Carson Nugget Ballroom in Carson City.
The event, a fundraiser for the Brewery Arts Center, will feature exceptional wines from the finest vineyards, tasting, light Hors d'oeuvres, live jazz orchestra and dancing. Tickets are $30 a person and are available at Home Treasures, Carson Mall or call Larry Messina, (775) 315-0141.

Carson City employee pens 'Bonners Fairy' children's book series

Carson City Support Services Specialist and children's book author Elizabeth "Liz" Ann Patterson has been busy since the last time Carson Now spoke with her.

In early 2011 she had penned her first children's fantasy and adventure book "Bonners Fairy," an all-ages story about teenage twins who discover a secret world of dark and light forces hidden in a portal on their father's estate.

Weather conference at Lake Tahoe to feature Nobel Prize team winner

Chris Field, a 2007 Nobel Prize team winner and lead author of the study on the effects of global climate change will be the keynote speaker at Lake Tahoe South's Operation Sierra Storm Meteorologist Conference, Jan 10.

Field, was the Co-Chair for Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which shared the 2007 Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore. He’s the director of the Department of Global Ecology, Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University and a 2009 Heinz Award recipient, recognizing extraordinary environmental achievement.
